It bothers me that she seems to age faster than the rest of Stoneybrook. I can't figure out when her actual birthday is, but we know it's in spring. So she turns from 6 to 7. Okay. But then she had a half birthday in LS. How is this possible?! It would be in fall and would have to be the next academic year (unless it's not actually 6 months after her birthday. I haven't read the book in over a decade). I know, I know, the time warp, but this is different. It's almost as headache-inducing as Kristy having a birthday in the movie. Is Kristy turning 13 or 14? If she's turning 13, Mal and Jessi really shouldn't be there. Argh! Honestly, they should've avoided birthdays once the time warp was in full-force. Did anyone besides Karen, Mary Anne, and the Arnolds have a birthday in the series?
This bothered me even as a kid. What makes it worse is that there's apparently a short story written by Ann about Karen preparing for her 8th birthday. This might not be that bad, since I'm not sure if it's canon and it might just be in the future anyway. But still!

Pamela Harding had a birthday. She should have turned 8 because Karen was already 7 at that point, but they did not say the age.
Abby and Anna turned 13 shortly after she joined the club.

That must be a weird by-product of the time warp because nobody in 8th grade would be 12. Abby's birthday is in October, so she should be 14 during most of 8th grade.

How could I forget that Abby and Anna turn 13?! There's a whole book about it lol (and I really liked that one too). I think this depends on the school district. My best friend in high school had a birthday in October, and was always one of the youngest kids. Same with her sister, who had a birthday in November. Another close friend of mine has a birthday in late December and was always one of the oldest. I'm guessing the cutoff is winter break? Idk. It is really weird to think that Abby is 12 when she's introduced since the other members of the club (besides the junior members) had been 13 for around 9 years.

^ I agree that it depends on school districts and maybe it even depends on the state as well. I remember one of my friends was born in December the same year that I was and she was allowed to be in the same grade. Perhaps in another district/state, she would've been with students that were born a year later.

That's so weird! The cutoff for us was late summer, about the same time school started. I assumed that was standard for everyone. Fall kids were the oldest, summer kids were the youngest. If the BSC went to my school and were still in their usual grades, Kristy would be the oldest (August), then Mary Anne (September), Abby (October), Logan (January), Dawn (February), Shannon (March), Stacey (April). That seems so wrong to me - the two oldest seem the youngest, and vice versa for the two youngest. This whole age convo probably belongs in another thread. I didn't mean to derail Karen's discussion [edit] I can't believe I missed Claudia! She has a July birthday so she would be the baby of the group. I absolutely don't see her as 11 months younger than Kristy, so my whole theory is wrong and Stoneybrook's cutoff is beyond my comprehension.

You have to be 5 or be turning 5 to start kindergarten, at least in my state. You generally turn 18 senior year. I had October and August people in my grade. October peeps turned 18 in Oct 98. August turned in Aug 99. So, they were almost a year apart in the same grade. I just realized that I don't know any September peeps and have no idea what was done with them! This website lists starting kindergarten ages by state. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page.) Connecticut actually allows kids to start earlier than most states, so the girls could have been younger 8th graders.

Like everyone else here said, it depends on the district. My birthday is the day after Abby's and I turned 13 during 8th grade! Our cutoff was in December, so some of my friends were almost a year older than me.

If I had a choice of baby-sitting one of the Brewer kids, I would rather sit for Andrew. He is very quiet and Karen is very much a handful. Especially with the Morbidda Destiny,Ben Brewer and Let's All Come In nonsense.
