I haven't read many LS books so I guess haven't seen that side of her. I need to dig up a few to read.

I think it's all in the way you interpret and perceive Karen, too. I used to dislike her but she slowly grew on me until I started just seeing all of the things we have in common (and ignoring things that used to bug me). I've been doing that a lot lately with the characters and books. If you want a real obnoxious child, I can gladly send you my little cousin ;D

Then I'm sure you've seen worse I admire the patience of anyone who considers going into teaching. Back on topic, just noticed that this thread is for Karen and Andrew both but a lot of it has been dedicated to saying how much attention Karen gets (isn't that giving her attention by doing that ) but Andrew has barely been mentioned. Anyone have thoughts on Andrew? I don't care for him. I think he is kind of whiney and (I'm going against popular opinion by being a Karen-fan) is actually the one who gets Karen in trouble and gets his way in a lot of situations. I think he gets just as much as Karen, if not more, and actually gets babied and gets his way more. I can't say I like him very much. Karen actually seems pretty good to him - she seems to genuinely try to help him (though sometimes with misguided attempts) and cares about him. Most of my views are coming from the LS books but this is my take on the Brewer kids.

I cannot stand Andrew. He is a meek, whiney little dork. Okay that sounds rather harsh for a 4 year old, lol, but I just really do not like Andrew. I feel like if I was a kid, I'd want to beat him up or something.

Andrew is shy and he doesn't talk very much or do very much, so it's hard for me to have much of an opinion about him. He is kind of whiny, but four-year-olds are allowed to be whiny.
lyricalangel, about being "dedicated readers," that reminds me of something my friend Tammy said when I said she was obsessed with some band: "I'm not obsessed; I'm just dedicated."

haha I feel kind of bad for what I said about Andrew now. Maybe I was in a hostile mood yesterday... poor little guy. I feel like his personality is probably VERY stifled by Karen. I can definitely picture him deliberately fading into the background and just letting Karen take over. I wonder if he's ever jealous of the attention she seems to get.

Andrew just seems like such a drip to me. I know Karen is loud and overshadows him a bit, and that he may be naturally shy, but he never seems to DO anything. He's just so bland. It's unfortunate, because they could have made him shy but cute & loveable. I think AMM should have taken just a little of the focus off of Karen and developed Andrew more as a character.

Looking at this thread reminded me of an Andrew moment I could not stand. It was in Karen's tattletale, where he got mad at Karen for some reason and started tattling on her for everything. He eventually got her in trouble for something she didn't do ( I think it was letting the dog out). Lisa and Seth of course believed him at first. That always made me so mad as a kid! I was so mad at Andrew in that book.

That is a perfect example of why I can't stand Andrew, msstock. In the LS books, he seems to always be whining and getting Karen in trouble when she is usually just trying to do something nice (though sometimes misguided attempts but she usually means well)

Karen does mean well. I think she really tries hard to be a good big sister....just sometimes she doesn't always go about it the best way. I can remember many times where Karen stuck up for Andrew, actually in Karen's tattletale later in the book she stood up for him for something else, even though he got her in trouble!

Wow, I should go and reread some of my Karen books to understand all this hostility towards Andrew! I like him, always have. I don't remember him as always whining and tattling. Sure, he did do those things, but what kid who has Karen as an older sister wouldn't I suppose it was never enough to make me annoyed with him. I remember him crying frequently, when he was in unfamiliar situations and things. But he was so darn cute in his illustrations. And while Karen could get short with him a lot, she seemed like a generally good big sister.
