I think they'd let her read them. After all, Watson gave her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond.

^ But the witch in that book was just a regular person not a witch from some fantastical world.

^ Right. Not sure if they would let her read Harry Potter or not. Probably because it is so "in" and parents seem to want to encourage their kids to be cool. (Ignore me, I'm in one of those moods tonight ;D) I just read Karen's Kite and really could relate to Karen being nice to Natalie, making her popular and then kind of losing her friends as they supported Natalie. I'm sure lots of other people have a different take on this but that's how I see it because it happened to me so many times. Was almost disappointed Andrew wasn't in that book much. He must be growing on me

Even if Watson and Lisa wouldn't let Karen read the books, she probably would read them in the library or at her friends' houses. Karen was way too smart to let something like that keep her from those books - there wouldn't be any chance she wouldn't be dying to get at them!

^ She might do the Claudia thing and hide them in her room (like put other books' jackets on them). Her parents would be mad at her at first but then care less about it as she continues reading them regardless.

I agree, I think Karen would find a way to read them with or without parent's permission. I am not a huge Harry Potter fan but I can see Karen being one for some reason.

^ Glad to hear I'm not alone in not being a huge Harry Potter fan (I actually dislike them, though). ;D Not sure about Karen. I think she might like them but maybe not since we do share similar taste in a lot of other books.

I don't like Harry Potter either. I read part of one book and to me it wasn't very well written.

I haven't read any of the books or seen any of the movies.

I've never read HP or seen the movies. That type of fantasy genre doesn't interest me at all. I don't see why Watson or Lisa would not let Karen read them though. What is so bad about them? The only people I've heard of who are anti-HP are extremely conservative Christians and no one in BSC land strikes me as that.

^ I agree with you about not liking fantasy. I'm a Christian and I don't think the HP books promote anything evil. I've read part of one and didn't really feel like they do. I'd probably let my kids read them when they get older.

I didn't think I'd like HP either because I don't like that sort of book, and I started the first one, didn't like it, and didn't try again for a few years. But then my friend made me read them all and I got hooked. The movies are cute, too, though the fourth one is rubbish.
Karen would totally be a Harry Potter fan. She's make Hannie and Nancy pretend to be Hermione and Ron, and poor Andrew would have to be Scabbers the rat or something...

I'd probably let my kids read them when they get older. Agree, as I am also a Christian and didn't find anything terribly "evil" about the HP books (though they don't promote the kinds of things I believe in but aren't "evil", either). I just wonder if Watson and Lisa would worry that the books would promote Karen's fascination with witches and maybe increase her fear of them but I doubt it because they let her read other witch books. I think they probably wouldn't mind, especially since the books are popular and parents seem to love to let their kids do things that are popular. ;D A totally different topic about Andrew.... I noticed he was called "Andy" in a few earlier books. Is he ever called that in any later ones? I like that as a nickname for him

Hmmm, are we forgetting Bertha Dow? Anyway, Karen's parents were fairly liberal with her and I don't think they'd have a problem with Karen reading the Potter series, or any age-appropriate books for that matter. Besides, I don't personally know any kids who were genuinely spooked by the Harry Potter books. How awesome would an HP-related BSC subplot be? On another note, what was with the lack of Lord of the Rings references in the BSC? Ann has never been shy about touting other children's books. A hamster called Frodo is kind of cheap on their parts.

^ Never thought of the Lord of the Rings not being mentioned (I don't care for those kinds of books) but you're right about it being almost surprising. I can kind of see AMM liking those but maybe not.
