^ITA. She'd probably be a baby-sitters DREAM. You could just read to her or help her with her homework.

Random but a startling thing occurred to me! Is Charlotte's last name pronounced "Johanssen" or "Yohanssen?"

Since it's set in the US, it's probably "Johanssen," and that's how they say it in the tv show.

Sorry I just got scared for a minute as all these years I've thought that the 'J' was pronounced and it suddenly occurred to me that maybe it's not Thank God it is That has happened to me before, for a year when I first started reading the BSC, I though MA's surname was pronounced 'SPYER." I was stunned when I realised it wasn't!

Thanks. Can't get the site to work, though. Maybe it is just down. I'll try again later.

In some of the later books it said that Charlotte was nine, did she recently have a birthday or was it just an inconsitency?

Probably an inconsistancy since I remember reading somewhere that she was 7 (kind of like Buddy Barrett being 7 and 8 in the same book.) Maybe she shares a birthday with Tiffany Kilbourne who seems to go back and forth from 10 to 11.

I always was kind of indifferent to Charlotte. However I liked the relationship between her and Stacey, but I agree it should have been shown more than told.

In some of the later books it said that Charlotte was nine, did she recently have a birthday or was it just an inconsitency? I remember Charlotte having a conversation with Stacey (in book #10, I think) where she says that she'll be nine on her next birthday, and that she thinks it sounds so grown up. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

I don't remember liking or disliking Charlotte as a kid, but she's among my favorites now. I spent a school year at a nearby daycare/preschool, and ended up with a "Charlotte" of my own. So I have a new appreciation for their relationship (which, I agree, wasn't terribly well-developed.)
And I may have teared up a little rereading Goodbye, Stacey, Goodbye. Maybe.

Charlotte still bugs me because there's something so Mary Sue about her. She's 'pretty' but doesn't think it, smart, low self-esteem, introverted... gack. Her relationship with Stacey was interesting but most of the time she just bored me.

I never thought of her as Sue-ish because none of her traits seemed that exaggerated to me. She was only mentioned as "pretty" once that I can recall (LMS...and Dawn), and she had her flaws. She actually seemed like one of the more realistic children. Or maybe I just thought so because I was so shy as a kid and she was really the only charge I could relate to.
The Sues of Stoneybrook, in my opinion? Those Perkins girls. (Though I liked them too!)
