I find it odd that not only are the BSC like bff's with all of their clients, but most of their clients are good friends as well! I'm reading Mallory and the Dream Horse right now (I know, snooore, but I'm going in order!) and the Pike kids go over to Nina and Eleanor Marshall's house to sign them up for the talent show. Nina nad Eleanor are 4 and 2!! And here's 9 y/o Vanessa, 8 y/o Nicky, 7 y/o Margo, and 5 y/o Claire recruiting them and hanging out with them in the backyard. It's random and weird. Another thing, IIRC in Kristy's Great Idea, DM is like, playing with 3 year old Jamie Newton. I barely recall this, so I could be COMPLETELY off, lmk if I am Stoneybrook is weird.

Wasn't DM only playing with Jamie because of a baby-sitting conflict? Like, DM couldn't get a sitter, so he was stuck with Jamie, who Kristy was sitting for? I haven't read that book in awhile, so my memory's a bit hazy...
But yeah, Stoneybrook seems like a very close-knit community.

Yeah, David Michael didn't want to play with Jamie cause he was a baby, but then Jamie brought out his GI Joe or something and all was good.
I hardly knew any of my neighbors, so reading this stuff is pretty strange. But that wouldn't make for interesting books.

Can you imagine if the Stoneybrook community didn't exist?
Kristy: Hey, I've got a great idea!

I've always thought this was strange because Mallory didn't seem to know Claudia/Kristy/Mary Anne at all except for them babysitting her. Was she really so dorky that the 10 year old trio wouldn't ever hang out with 8 year old Mal? Age was no big deal to any of the other kids in town.

^exactly. The BSC charges play together, pretty much regardless of age, but Mallory was never friends w/ the BSC girls when she was younger, which makes me wonder, who on earth did she hang out with?

Didn't she say she didn't really need a lot of friends, right before she met Jessi? I think she must have spent most of her time reading and writing in her room - not to mention taking care of 29138 siblings and an always pregnant mom.
I did always find it strange however how all the ninie year olds hang out with two year olds and stuff. Age gap anyone?

Hey, that's a good point! In Hello Mallory, she had some casual acquaintances (you know, the Mobobwee girls) but it seemed as though she was basically a loner.

Even after joining the BSC, she never seemed to have any other friends besides the BSC. Well, none of the other BSC members did, really, but at least we knew they were capable of making friends e.g. Stacey in NY, Dawn in California, the Shillaber twins, Emily, Erica... Mal makes friends when she goes off to boarding to school, but prior to that, it really is just the BSC.

Maybe she told herself she didn't need a lot of friends, but she was desperate for a best friend when Jessi conveniently moved to town. Mal was so lonely she didn't even care that Jessi was B-L-A-C-K. Plus she was always the most upset whenever the club fought. I always pictured her hyperventilating on the floor of Claudia's room while the others bitched.

Stacey, Dawn and Jessi were all like that as well. Since they just moved there and don't have any other friends, they always had a panic attack at the thought of the club breaking up. Stacey wore a sandwich board to school! That's how desperate they were. It's just weirder for Mallory because she's lived there her whole life. You'd think there'd be some semi-friendly eleven-year-olds.

d**n, that's lonely!
Why did they go from referring to Jessi as BLACK in the earlier books and then referring to her as African American in the later books? She was never, ever "African American" in the earlier books, just - there's no other way to say it, sorry to have to be so blunt - BLACK.
Funny though, Claudia's race was mentioned almost as an afterthought. I never thought of her as the "Asian one" whereas Jessi was - and always will be - the BLACK one.

Being Asian made Claudia beautiful with her jet black!hair and gorgeous!complexion, whereas being BLACK made Jessi DIFFERENT. Also interesting, Jessi only liked (that I can recall) black boys, and Claudia went out with a couple of Asian boys, but the other girls only ever liked white boys. Too risky or just how it is?

/\ I think Claudia loved boys of all colors. I remember the CIT at Camp Mohawk was Japanese and she mentioned that her parents would be happy, but a lot of her Stoneybrook crushes were white guys. There wasn't too much racial variety to pick from in town, ya know?
