^ I love how Matt hits a home run at a softball game and all the other Krushers are signing to him, and one of them accidentally gives him the sign for "oven."

I had forgotten that! I always think it is funny when the kids give him the wrong signs and enjoy some of the descriptions of when he starts signing rapidly. I really like Matt pretty well in most books. It is just Hayley who bugs me (it may be the rat tail

Just reread Island Adventure and Hayley was quite interesting. The other kids handled being on the island pretty well but she seemed to keep throwing fits. I shouldn't blame her, I guess, because I probably would have done the same thing (I am an unsurpassed, champion fit thrower - even as an adult I loved the part where she threw herself on the ground and started screaming to get the boat back. This is probably something I would have done but it made Hayley sound like a brat (uh oh - I must be a brat too I also noticed that the rat tail is prominently featured in one of the illustrations.

I like both Haley and Matt, but I don't have the latter books.. So I assume that Haley got worser with time? I was quite happy that a deaf child appeared in the books, coz I am deaf as well.. And in the translated book here Nicky signed "swimming", when he has to say "run"..

^aw, that's cool! I have a best friend who's deaf, but she wears a cochlear implant, so she doesn't know sign language... and I like Haley and Matt too. i like how she was really supportive of Matt, and the two of them seem to have a really close relationship in the earlier books. I know Haley is bratty in "Claudia and the Little Liar", but I haven't read enough of the later books either to know if she gets worse or not??

I can see why you like Matt and always like having characters I can relate to, too. I also like him. Don't know why I don't like Hayley but I think it may have to do with her temper (though I do think it's sweet that she is usually standing up for Matt) and how this reminds me of a girl I know. It's interesting how a lot of my opinions of the characters are impacted by me relating them to real life people. I hadn't ever thought of this before. I just read Kristy and the Missing Child and really liked both Matt and Hayley in that one.

I've known blind and deaf kids who were popular in college. Didn't know any when I was a kid though.

What does Haley do in Little Liar? I've never read that book and I've never quite understood the anti-Haley sentiment that seems popular among BSC fans. I mean I always thought she was kinda weird and slightly annoying (but I'm just not a fan of the Braddocks in general) but people seem to really dislike her.

^ She told all kinds of lies about Claud and the other sitters to her parents to try to get them in trouble. And she told lies (not having homework, lying about doing her book reportm, etc.) to the sitters. She then told lies to all of the kids that the sitters were "spies" who were out to get them and turned all of them against the BSC. Basically, she was an awful lying brat. She made me so mad in this one. Before, I had just felt the same way as you but after reading Little Liar, I can't stand her. She was just really difficult and frustrating to even read about ;D

What was the reason for all her lying? Was it ever explained in the book?

^ It was explained but I can't remember the reason anymore. I think it had to do with Matt getting more attention, which is understandable that could create some issues for her. I can't imagine having a brother with a disability like that and thinking about it does kind of make me feel for Hayley.

That makes sense I guess. I can imagine it would be really difficult to have a sibling with a major disability like that.

I will definitely have to look out for Little Liar, sounds kind of interesting. Unfortunately I haven't had too much spare cash lately for book buying (renewing car registration and all that other fun stuff that randomly pops up to drain your checking account!)

I really enjoyed both Matt and Hayley in Secret Language. The part at the ballet where Hayley signed "and they lived happily ever after" made me smile for some reason. I think she seemed a lot less "tough" (for lack of a better word) in this one and I could sympathize with her more. I thought it was very sweet when Matt came on stage to give Jessi the flowers. I also liked Mrs. Braddock in this book. She sounded like a great mom and just a great person. Was she mentioned much in books after that (beyond the general "Mrs. Braddock called and needs a sitter")? It's a shame she wasn't developed or used more as a character. I always like reading about the client parents. Kind of gives some insight into the kids, too.
