Okay, I thought of them yesterday when I finally realized my boss' step daughter is named Marnie. It made me laugh, because obviously I thought of Marnie Barrett (the not-as-smart-as-Gabbie-Perkins 2 year old), but his step daughter is in her late 30s or early 40s. Can't picture the name on a grown woman!
Anyway, what do you think of the Barretts? They annoy the crap out of me. I think Suzi is pretty adorable (I love how they describe her as having a pudgy tummy) but Buddy is annooooooying. Can't say anything bad about Marnie (except that Gabbie is just a few months older and already playing softball. Get with the program, Marnie!).

I like the Barrets! I love Suzi and I do like Buddy, I like the way he kind of clings to Dawn in Dawn and the impossible three. Totally believable. And how he calls home when his dad takes him! Aww. Also, doesn't Marnie make a really cute face when she's happy? I can totally picture that!!

Her ham face. That's about the only thing she can do. I always thought it was weird that they didn't even have her say something once in awhile. Poor two year old Stoneybrookites who aren't Gabbie Perkins.

I loved the Barretts. I thought they were a normal family that wasn't perfect, unlike all of the oh-so-amazing families in Stoneybrook. The mom was unorganized and unemployed, the house was a mess, the kids behaved like they SHOULD have for their ages. Thank goodness Marnie didn't play softball, I would have felt very inferior to the 2 year olds in that dang town.
But...I didn't like them once the Dewitts came along. I dont know why.

it was oh, another stoneybrook happy ending. no one stays divorced in that town very long, unless they're waiting for a millionaire.

I always pretended that Marnie and Ryan were just a little over 1 and that Gabbie was close to 3. Kind of like how the 10 year old Pike triplets still need sitters while 11 year old Mal and Jessi are left with so many responsibilities - like Jessi being left alone with Becca and Squirt for the whole weekend. I manage to get around the strangeness of these things by imagining the characters as being the ages I think they should be instead of the ages specified by the book. Then again, I know nothing about kids so have no idea what they should be doing at different times in their lives. I do know that I talked really early but my cousin didn't utter a word until he was like 3 (which apparently isn't normal). Even in real life, some of the kids I do know seem much more mature than others at the same age so maybe the differences in the books aren't that unrealistic after all. (If this makes no sense, I apologize. I'm getting a cold and my brain is in a total fog

^I kind of do the same thing. I picture Gabbie as closer to 3 (although they do simply say she's 2 1/2 I believe) whereas Marnie's just turned 2. Then again, I also attribute it to the fact that Mrs. Barrett is a horrible mother who neglects her baby and doesn't read to her enough, whereas Mrs. Perkins adores her gorgeous daughters and lavishes them with special attention and education-based toys. I just picture the Barretts as dirty and neglected. Like I could see Marnie stuck in a playpen crying for half an hour while her mother bitches about not getting enough quiet time. I always picture her in just a diaper (a soggy one) with messy hair and tears dried on her kool-aid stained cheeks Suzi and Buddy seem like the type of kids who'd run crazy around a store, barefoot because their mother doesn't think they need to wear shoes in public. I suppose now that I think about it, Buddy is the only one (besides their mother) I didn't care for. Although he was kind of cute in Sea City Here We Come during Hurricane Bill.

What about Eleanor Marshall? Honestly though, I don't think the other two year olds were "behind" so much as they were ignored and not fleshed out. Gabbie gets plenty of personality and page space, while the others get nothing but allergies. They're not even allowed to go to carnivals! At least Emily Michelle gets to talk, even if she is portrayed as in need of special attention.

^That's true. The Perkins family contained a child even younger than Gabbie, though, so I think all the other 2 year olds were just "the baby" whereas they HAD to flesh out Gabbie a bit more because of Laura being born!

I always picture her in just a diaper (a soggy one) with messy hair and tears dried on her kool-aid stained cheeks LOL! I kind of picture the Barretts in the same way. I always still see them as the Impossible Three with this messy house and stuff -- like they were before Dawn stepped in and took charge of the household. Anyway, I'm kind of neutral about the Barretts as a whole. I don't love them, but I don't particularly dislike them either. Marnie and Suzi always sounded really cute. Buddy was just kind of meh.

^Yeah I'm kinda now realizing Buddy pretty much ruined those kids for me. Well, their mother did as well cause I can't STAND her. She seems very selfish and immature.

I really didn't like Ms Barrett. Maybe I would've liked her more if she looked like a mess, too, just like the house and the kids, but she looked STUNNING (according to the girls) all the time! She took care of herself, but not of the kids? So selfish.

I kind of like the Barretts, but I wish the DeWitts had never come along because the whole Barrett/DeWitt thing bores me.

I liked the Barretts because they were different- and because they seemed normal. I do think Gabbie is closer to 3- does she still wear diapers like Marnie? I liked Suzy because she wasn't afraid to speak her mind, and Buddy was just a great character.
