^ They do. I love reading about little kids but admit that I know nothing about what is normal for what age and don't really ever put much thought into it. Know all kids are so very different, anyway, too.

I agree about the toddlers sounding too young for their age in the speeking departement. My mom told me both me and my brother uttered our first words at least somewhere before our first birthday - like, at 9 or 10 months, I think. We were early talkers, though, but I always assumed it wouldn't be normal for 1.5 year olds to still talk less than we did before we were even one.

I have found a few more instances of Marnie saying some words. She always sounds younger than 2 to me but I think I just like imagining her like that ;D

I was talking in complete sentences by around 7-8 months, but my brother didn't start even uttering complete words until he was a year old. So yeah, it depends on the kid but Marnie still seemed abnormally slow for a 2 year old. She seems almost like a 1 year old.

I just found another instance of Ryan Dewitt talking when he tells his dad to "pick him up" on Christmas morning in Here Come the Bridesmaids. I'm searching for these things now. ;D

Hey Katie, I just have to say, I love the one who says "hug!" and then "love!" Too cute for words. Anyway....
I still find it hard to believe that a 2 year old could play on a kids softball team, even with a wiffle ball and what, a foam bat? I've known my boyfriend's niece since just before she turned 2, and she's currently 3 and a half. I think she's very bright, but I couldn't picture her at 2, holding a bat and holding interest to play the game. I think most 2 year olds might swing at the ball, and then discover a field of flowers and run off, and then discover the sandbox, and then realize they need some apple juice, etc. Did someone have to basically babysit Gabbie during each Krushers game/practice? Like, Mallory would have been like "Okay, Gabbie, over here, no sit down, no time to wait your turn" -- it just bugs me, because it's so unrealistic. And what's with singing entire songs from memory? Well, I guess I can't really say anything, because my boyfriend's niece has the Virginia Tech cheer (or fight song, whatever) memorized.

I have babysat for two year olds like Gabbie (they are closer to 3) and for two year olds like Marnie and Ryan (they are closer to just turning 2). There is a big difference. They do make Marnie and Ryan talk a lot more in the later books, I realized, as they got older. I think they did a pretty good job with the portrayal of the toddler's ages. They should have made Gabbie turn three in one of the books though, to make her seem older than the other Stoneybrook toddlers.

Okay, if a kid is "2", they can be either 24 months or 35 months and still be "2"... Thats why most babies are referred to as 25 months VS 2 years old... BIG difference. So Marnie and Gabbie could have been nearly a year apart, which would explain why Gabbie is more 'advanced'. Plus, Mrs. Barrett is a space.

Gabbie's always' referred to as "two and a half"- which probably still means she's much closer to her third birthday. I see exactly that difference between my dd (27 months) and a little girl at church (34 months, I think).

Squirt seemed to be able to speak a lot more than Marnie did, despite being younger. (He was fourteen months or so in Hello, Mallory, wasn't he?) He used a lot more baby talk than she did, and had a few understandable words.

Babies vary a lot, though. My brother was super verbal from a very early age and I was pretty mute until I went to kindergarten.

Of course, Gabbie never quite got a chance to turn 3!

Marnie says a few words occasionally. I haven't read much of the DeWitts and the Papadakiss, so I can't comment on Ryan and Sari.

The thing that bugged me about Gabbie was that she called everyone by their first and last names. When my daughter was 2 1/2, she didn't even know people had last names! And did her mother tell her all the sitters last names? Other than that, I always liked Gabbie. I thought she was cute. I thought Marnie was adorable too.
