I LOVE Emily Michelle. She just sounds so adorable! I think Caludia (ha ha, BSR humor, I mean Claudia, of course) and the Great Search is my favorite BSC book because of all the Emily involvement. Anyone else LOVE Emily?

Yeah...I felt so sorry for her in CGS because she was crying out for her birth mother...I wonder who her birth mother was, anyway?

She's okay. I think the descriptions of her are cute, she's always toddling around after the other kids and stuff.

She sounds cute, but the way she is always described as "Kristy's adopted sister" bugs.

I never really gave much thought to Emily Michelle. She sounds kinda cute, but -- this is going to sound really mean and un-pc -- it bugged me how slow she was. I mean, maybe it's just the way they handled it, but they made her seem SO far behind. I understand there is the language issue, but I dunno.. something about it annoyed me.

Question out of curiosity... if Emily Michelle was living in the US and surrounded by only English-speaking people, wouldn't she have picked up the language faster, considering she was only two yrs old and probably didn't even really speak Vietnamese much. A girl I knew came over from Turkey when she was five yrs old and after a couple of weeks in an Australian school, was fluent in English.

You'd think so, but apparently Emily Michelle was traumatized or something. I don't know. She was just slow, and it was weird. Maybe she just really likes boots.

I kinda view Emily Michelle as furniture- like a really fancy end table. She was just kinda there- not really all that important or purposeful, but looked good.
WHat can I say, definitely not one of my favourites. *shrug*

Really good point! I mean, it's not like they pulled an Angelina Jolie and went to Vietnam to adopt her, so what's the deal? She really shouldn't have been so far behind.

I just reread Claudia and the Great Search and am more sympathetic toward Emily now. I still don't really care much for her - other than thinking that she does sound cute - maybe because she is so far behind (I know that sounds mean). It may also be because of the whole situation with Nannie being the one who raises her (transferring my own "Grandma" issues). But after reading about Emily calling the Vietnamese word for Mama in her nightmares it made me a more understanding about why she would be so far behind. It sounds like her early life was not very good - in an orphanage, likely neglected, etc. As for her role in Claudia and the Great Search, I thought she was really cute and enjoyed her relationship with Claud. I wish they would have developed it more.

She sounds cute, but the way she is always described as "Kristy's adopted sister" bugs. It bugged me in Snowbound how Kristy said "but IO don't think of her as my adopted sister. She's just my sister, like Karen and Andrew are my sister and brother." You'd never know that from the chapter twos. Anyway, I'd like to hear more about her life in Vietnam.

That never bothered me, because in the chapter twos they describe everything. She's just explaining how it happened. Emily's her sister because they adopted her from Vietnam. Karen and Andrew are her step-siblings because her mom married their dad. They give their whole life history. If they didn't explain it, we might think Emily Michelle was Elizabeth and Mr. Kishi's love child.

In one of Karen's first books Emily was sick a lot with ear infections and had to have an operation to have tubes put in her ears. Watson and Elizabeth thought maybe she was language delayed because she couldn't hear that well, but she didn't change at all after the operation and it was never mentioned again. It bugged me how in some books she could barely say "cookie" and in others she managed full sentences like "I want a cookie too."
