i didn't like emily, i personally kinda hated her and i sympathized with Karen and thought it was hillarious when Karen framed her in the one book with the cookies or soemthing like that. hahaha Emily was slow, and i felt it was so obnoxious the unreality of it all. I mean, she was in an ophanage that didn't sound like it was very caring and loving to the children, but somehow she's fluent in Vietnamese? and she never picked up on anything in America? with people like Karen in her life? and Kristy? i can't see how those 2 could not try to help her out -/ Emily was just “slow” in being behind kids her age and she was catching up. I never got the impression that she knew much more than a few words in Vietnamese, either. Just heard that she cried “mama” (or something like that) in a nightmare a few times but never heard her speak in Vietnamese any other time. With her early life, I would be surprised if she wasn’t behind other kids her age. I can imagine that the orphanage was a traumatic experience and not a very nice place. Even good orphanages, though, tend not to be able to provide all of the nurturing a young child needs and kids who are not properly nurtured when they are babies and young often develop slower than others who are. Emily is fortunate to have great people in her life to help her catch up and I can see her catching up through the books. She might not reach the same level as the others her age for quite a while but I can’t say it will never happen. I think she’s probably a smart little girl who just didn’t have the best start in life.

I liked Emily Michelle as much as you can like a character who is so on the periphary of the books. I thought it was really sweet when she's working with Claudia. What was the book where Karen keeps getting really annoyed with her and Emily is really upset?I remember feeling really sorry for her.

What I just started noticing is that she is referred to as Emily Michelle most of the time in BSC and in the LS books she is called just Emily.

^ I've noticed that, too. I think different people call people different variations of names, though. There is a little girl who I always call "Maddie" even though almost everyone else calls her Maddison. "Maddie" is what I've always called her, though, and seems to "fit" her better (it's also easier ;D)

I noticed that they call her just Emily in LS too. If she wants a different nickname when she's older, she can go by Mimi = E mily Michelle.

^ That's cute. ;D I never thougth of that. Maybe it would be too confusing with Claudia's grandma, though...

Yes, obviously. I merely meant it as a way for Mimi's memory to live on

^ I guess I didn't think of it that way but it would be sweet, especially considering that Claud seems close with Emily. ;D

My friend's sister calls the family dog, Melanie, but my friend calls it, Correen (I don't know the spelling).

In Kristy and the Missing Fortune that it said Emily and Watson were much closer since he had been working from home. That made a lot of sense and I actually saw it happening in the books, especially the LS books. I really liked this as it reminded me of how my dad and I actually got closer, too, after his heart problems forced him to cut down on the hours at work. ;D

I really do like Emily Michelle - she sounds like a doll and I also liked the way she pronounced Claudia and Janine in Claudia and the Great Search ;D what a sweetie! I really feel for her, too - I mean, life in the orphanage couldn't have been very nice, even if the people who ran it were as nice as could be. My heart also went out to her when she called out the Vietnamese word for Mama in her sleep. I wonder what happened to Emily's parents - did they give her up, or did they die? One thing I found is that a lot of times, she's referred to as Emily - yet DM is always David Michael. What's the difference? And what's with the whole 'two names as one' anyway? I mean, Mary Anne, Mary Jean, etc, are fairly common (even my real first name, Julianne, is two names kind of smooshed into one, though I know some people have it like Julie Anne, too) but DM and EM kinda struck me as odd, because they're longer names that don't usually be put together and used for a first name. Unless Emily is her first name and Michelle her middle (and they just say her first and middle names a lot) and David Michael is all his first name? I don't know. lol.

I never thought about it that way. I used to babysit for a boy named John Mark, where Mark was his middle name, he just went by both. Maybe that was the case with David Michael.
