Was Emily really delayed in a worrisome manner? They made it seem like she was going to “ride the short bus” for the rest of her life. Google tells me that a two year old should have at least 50 words in their vocabulary. I feel like she had that many? She could follow a conversation well (more so in Little Sister books). She wasn’t as big of a problem from Karen’s point of view. Karen taught Andrew how to read (so she says). I think she would have really embraced teaching Emily things if she thought she could be the hero.

They made a huge deal of her delays, but in the time warp she has been in the US for less than a year. She was still just a toddler. They should have cut her some slack. In a couple years after hearing English all the time, a lot of it will naturally resolve itself.

Emily did learn slowly, but her ability would probably continue to increase as time went on. I don't think it's fair to compare her to Gabbie Perkins as they did. Yes, they're the same age, but Gabbie is super mature for age two.

Karen would probably find some way to incorporate Emily's heritage into the family if only for the excuse of celebrating another holiday. The girl loved her holidays to the point that she invented new ones more than once (augustania and brother's day). She would want to know about Vietnamese holidays and celebrate them. In 'Claudia and The Great Search' there is a part where Emily is compared to Marnie Barrett and Gabby Perkins by Claudia. I didn't think a comparison to Gabby 'super genius' Perkins was fair Yeah, that's what I said in my last post. Gabbie is super ahead for her age. She's compared directly to Sari in how they learn the new song. Sari learns the words as they do it over and over. Emily never learns any of the words and forgets to fall most of the time. On the other hand, Marnie doesn't seem that different to Emily, really. She doesn't talk much and she apparently isn't toilet-trained yet ("working on it"). It's hard to compare Emily to Marnie because she doesn't seem to have so many capabilities.
