I remember I couldn't stand her in Claudia and the Bad Joke. Is she ever mentioned again in the series?

I seem to remember Betsey being in another book, though it might have just been one of those things “Mrs. Sobak called wanting a sitter for …..” at a meeting. I can’t bleive that she had the nerve to hire the BSC again and that she kept hiring them in Bad Joke. I couldn’t stand Betsey in this book, which I didn’t care for at all. She seemed almost like a mean little girl and I never got the impression that she ever felt real remorse or understood the seriousness of what she had done. Maybe she just reminds me of how my little cousin twisted my arm and sprained it several years ago and my grandma said after I came back from getting X-Rays – “don’t tell her or her mom. THEY’LL feel bad.” Then a few years after that, my cousin said to me, “Remember when I almost broke you arm? That was pretty funny, wasn’t it?” Um, maybe for you…..

She was in Claudia and the First Thanksgiving. She got the lead role in the third grade Thanksgiving play they constructed and Stoneybrook parents rioted about it being "Un-American"

Oh that's right, she did get the lead role. I thought that was interesting. Seriously, Mrs. Sobak still hiring them to sit is weird. Would putting their foot (feet) down and refusing really have been "bad for business?" Even if their worst fear came true (a parent telling other parents and making them look bad), wouldn't they think the other parents would be on the BSC's side after Betsy was, oh, responsible for a sitter's broken bone?

^ I had forgotten about that - probably because this is one of my least favorite books and I only read it around Thanksgiving time. Agree wtih Booboo that I probably would have refused to sit for Betsy. I never understood why they thought they could "teach her a lesson." Have learned from experience that kids who don't really seem to have a conscience (Betsy seemed like that to me) don't learn. She seems almost like a mean-spirited little girl in Bad Joke. Don't remember her in First Thanksgiving. What is she like in that one?

I don't know that Betsy was a mean kid. I think she just really had no idea to act around people and get positive attention. It seemed like her parents had no idea how to discipline or control her. She seemed genuinely upset about having hurt Claudia.

I think she had a conscience. I mean, her actions were terrible, but there was probably something more there - a reason behind her behaviors and personality that the book didn't go into.
Betsy impresses them in First Thanksgiving because she's such a good actress. I don't know if Claudia refers to her as their former prankster charge that injured her but I don't think she does. I'm reading Farewell, Dawn right now, and Dawn talks about how things finally improved once she and Mary Anne had separate rooms - with no mention of her scaring her via the passage. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong, but it's like that whole incident is never brought up again, especially by Dawn, which bugs me.

^ Quickly reread Bad Joke and agree with you now that Betsy did feel bad about hurting Claud and was just another case of not knowing how to act. I think I misjudged her reaction and assumed that she didn't feel bad about what she had done because her mother certainly didn't seem too bothered or remorseful. Betsy, though, was, I think. Like the Delaneys and Lowells and a lot of the other kids, I think she was just another case of not knowing right from wrong because no one ever taught her. I will have to reread First Thanksgiving, now, to see if I can learn more about Betsy. I would like to like her but haven't read enough about her to have a very positive view right now.

Just noticed in Mother's Day Surprise that the BSC invited Betsy to go to the Carnival but she couldn't come. I certainly wouldn't have invited the girl who broke Claud's leg, even if she did apologize. I'm probably being to harsh and unforgiving but.... I thought this was kind of odd.

I agree with most of you - naturally - about not liking Betsy very much and I also felt she never felt extremely bad about what she did. On the other hand, I also kind of disagreed with the whole BSC pranking her thing, it just seemed wrong from such 'responsible sitters'.

^ Totally disagreed with that too for the same reasons. It seemed to just show Betsy that it was okay. After all, the BSC does it....

More than just the pranking being okay, even, it seemed to me that they were setting an example that revenge is okay.

Aww . . . I liked how they took revenge on her. I like it when they act immature. ;D
