Back to Betsy.... ;D I never got the impression in Bad Joke that she really realized she could have hurt Claudia. The way the girls "taught" her made her focus on the fact that she "embarrassed" Claudia because she was thinking about how she was embarrassed. Maybe that's just my impression of her feelings, though.

I feel bad for Betsy. Her parents are older, she's an aunt at 8, and she's probably totally spoiled. I don't think her parents even realized how much the jokes were alienating her at school. I think she felt really bad about Claudia, but didn't know how to cope, so she played more jokes. Or maybe she really didn't know how serious a broken leg really is.
I don't think the sitters should have pranked on Betsy though. I don't like that as an example of "good babysitting". But my solution wouldn't have made a very exciting book, so there you have it.

^ I agree with all but still have problems feeling sorry for Betsy. ;D (my cousin nearly broke my arm and acted the same way that Betsy did about it - not realizing the seriousness - so that might be why I have a bit of a sore spot about this.....) I didn't realize she was an aunt. I guess it's been a while since I've read this one. I need to reread and see if my perspective has changed any. ;D

Well, I do think that breaking someone's leg is rather horrible. But I can dislike her behavior and still feel bad for the child.

^ I usually can do that, too, but like I said, I think I just have a sore spot for this because I somehow relate it to almost getting my arm broken (yes, she was only five and I was sixteen but she is a really huge kid and I'm really small ;D)

The first time I read #19, I didn't like Betsy. I liked her the second time, though -she seemed sweet.

when I hear of her, I imagine a scary red headed pigtailed girl with freckles and a scary face like Jayden Spears and screwed up teeth
or like the dentist's niece in Finding Nemo

I am not a fan of jokes or pranks. I think no matter what the intent (in general) someone, somehow ends up being hurt.
I agree with others that while I doubt Betsy pulled her stunt with the intent to injure Claudia, I don't think she felt (that badly) about having done so. Her parents obviously didn't either because we didn't exactly read about the Sobak's calling the Kishi's or even Claudia to apologize or check on her. Also, Betsy's pranks continued. I do agree that Betsy probably was very lonely, unsure of herself, and used jokes as a way to garner attention.
The above said, the BSC's retalitation was uncalled for. I can understand the temptation and it was "good" to see them acting their age for once but still, not "responsible" or "mature--" two of their favorite adjectives to describe themselves.

I've got a theory as to why Betsy kept playing jokes even after she broke Claudia's leg. Maybe she subconsciously thought that if she kept playing pranks and nobody else got hurt, that would somehow mean that breaking Claudia's leg hadn't been her fault, either. Yes, I know it doesn't make sense, but people do think that way.

^That could be...especially for a younger child like Betsy. Or maybe somehow seeing other people not be hurt would minimize what happened with Claudia. I still think the Kishis and Sobak parents should have been in touch.

That's what I thought about Betsy playing jokes on everyone after she broke Claudia's leg.

Betsy was a little monster, but there is something kind of endearing about her. I don't think I'd ever sit for her, though.
