I love Janine, especially since people like to say she and Charlie had a thing on the side lol

I'm with all of you who like Janine so much more now than you did when you were younger. She really IS kind of awesome...it's like we were expected not to like her because Claudia didn't at the beginning of the series. I thought she was annoying in the beginning. Like when she announced that she wasn't sure if Claudia's Baby-Sitters Club sign needed an apostrophe in it or not. I'm not a fan of unsolicited advise when it is just to point out the flaws of someone else.

^In those instances, Janine reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory.

She looks good in the new cover of Claudia and Mean Janine (like the pic in my avatar right now).

While I agree that Janine does look better on the cover of Claudia and Mean Janine, I think the whole cover looks better overall. I thought that the original cover looked ugly and that Janine wasn't how I pictured her. I pretty much picture her to look like she does on the new cover of Claudia and Mean Janine.

So I'm reading Claudia and Mean Janine again, and I think that Janine is really misrepresented in this book, if not the early books, and if not the entire series. I don't feel that it was anymore "mean Janine" than it was "mean Claudia". In fact, I think Claudia was bitchier to Janine and has more of a history of being a jerk. At least Janine made attempts with Claudia, even if she used big words. And I felt for her with the Guinness Book of World Records question, because I really think she thought Claudia would guess the book -- and she probably thought the fact that it was "in her room" was a big hint. I also felt for Janine with Claudia and Mimi's relationship, since it would be sad to see your Grandmother have a relationship with your sister that you could never have. Plus you are the older one.
Janine looks like Mrs. Kishi to me on the new cover of Mean Janine.

Inspired to write a fic about Janine after reading a snark of Claudia and the Mean Janine. The more I think about it, I can totally relate to her. My younger sister isn't that interested in school, pays way more attention to her clothes, and has a ton of friend drama. I'm not as patient as Janine is when I try to help her with her homework, though. What's especially frustrating is when it seems like she's not even trying or doesn't listen when I try to explain. Sounds like Claudia, right? I like the way Janine talks. Yes, it's stereotypical, but maybe that's just who she is. I don't speak that way, but I do enjoy writing Jane Austen fics and fairy tales with advanced diction and syntax reminiscent of the 19th century. Furthermore, having someone constantly correct your grammar may be annoying, but she's really trying to help, and let's face it, Claudia can use all the help she can get. She's not trying to make her look bad or talking down to her as if she can't understand big words, which don't even sound so big now. What's even more annoying is Claudia's "How needs scool, Im an artisst!" philosophy. Janine is portrayed as a computer-obsessed loner, but consider the source. Claudia hardly knows her own sister and doesn't even give her a chance. In Mean Janine, she blames her for not helping when no one even bothered to ask, and when Janine admits she wishes she could be closer to Mimi, Claudia's response is, "Maybe if you got off the computer and tried harder." Earth to Claudia, she is trying, and you're pushing her away. Janine sounds like a great sister, and Claudia comes off as an unappreciative brat. For all we know, Janine could have a ton of friends, or at least two or three good friends, and they could talk about things that interest them without annoying younger siblings whining that they're boring or just trying to make them look dumb. Janine and her friends probably laugh about how much drama the BSC goes through. Claudia wants to spend more time on art! Mary Anne cut her hair without club approval! Stacey doesn't want her life to revolve around babysitting! About The Mystery at Claudia's House, anyone else find it odd that Janine didn't rat Claudia out for having candy and Nancy Drew books, but Claudia just has to find out what Janine's up to and tells her parents right away? Or that the Kishis allow their thirteen-year-old daughter to run around town constantly, but Janine goes out for pizza with a friend and she gets in trouble? I think they really were studying, got pizza afterward since she missed dinner, and just didn't say anything because she didn't want to argue. I think it kind of shows how they think of Claudia as the social one and Janine as the smart one who has to study all the time.

Maybe that's because Janine lied by saying that she's going to the library when she was really going to Pizza Express. I think that's what got Janine grounded instead of eating pizza with a friend. Also, her parents said that they didn't mind if she (Janine) ate pizza.

I remember reading something where Ann related to Claudia and Janine with her and her younger sister, Jane. Jane was more like Claudia (athletic, outgoing, lots of friends) and Ann was more like Janine (reserved, shy, quiet). We all know how Ann resembles Mary Anne, but I wonder how much of Ann is like Janine?

She's basically looked the same in her author photos since the 80s.

Oh, but greer, Ann is sooo sophisticated that she puts Stacey to shame. LOL. In one of her author photos she's wearing a Peter Pan style blouse buttoned up to her neck. In the other she's wearing a STRIPED t-shirt. Talk about dibbly fresh!

I think it’s funny that Claudia hands down Janine’s old button down-shirts, gray kilts, and crew neck sweaters to Mary Anne and Kristy. Do they ever mention wearing them? It’s amusing to picture two Janine look-alikes walking around the Kishi house.
