I looked up posterity after it was used in one of the Indian in the Cupboard books. Someone said it and a bunch of boys started laughing because they thought it was "posterior".

^Hah, I loved those books too. While getting some BSC books at a used bookstore awhile ago, I discovered a 5th book in the series that I never knew existed. That was exciting.

I think Claudia was just super jealous of her. More jealous than she let on. I agree with that and it would be completely understandable for Claud to be jealous of her for the fact that her parents were super proud of Janine's intelligence and Claudia wasn't a good student.

True enough. I really liked Janine in Claudia and the middle school mystery. I haven't read mean Janine in a long time, but I probably reread it again sometime in the future. Its kinda weird, my sister made up a character kinda like Janine.(super smart and a computer nerd) a few years back.

I almost wonder if Claudia wasn't a good student because Janine was - since she couldn't be AS smart, why try at all?

Someone else comes up with that theory in the series... is it Stacey? I can't remember now.

I think it was Stacey. Maybe that's where I got it from.

I was a big Janine-type loser, I actually KNEW all the big words she used as a kid!!! I really like Janine a lot, I think there was more depth to her character than we actually got to see.

I like Janine more as an adult then I did as a kid, although I still find it a bit annoying when we corrects the girls.

^I agree, digigirl. Even though I do like Janine, a lot of her corrections were unnecessary and seemed kind of rude.

I'm also jumping on the bandwagon that likes Janine. The only thing I didn't like was the "smart stereotype" - i.e. that just because she's intelligent, she talks like a textbook and dresses like an old-fashioned schoolmarm. I could understand her speaking correctly, and maybe not paying much attention to her clothes, but c'mon! She's still just a teenager. I have known quite a few intelligent people in my day -- including a 13-year-old boy who is on the verge of getting his Masters degree in engineering -- and despite their extraordinary minds, they still are - gasp! - outwardly pretty average. They wear jeans and make jokes, just like anyone else...

I also like Janine more a lot now then I did when I was younger. Grammar correcting wouldn't bother me much, unless it became excessive, which in Janine's case was true. When rereading the books, Janine is definitely more of a caring, sensitive person then I remember. I also agree though that she didn't deserve the smart person stereotype.

I agree about the Janine stereotype being very annoying and don't mind the big words because I tend to do that myself. My dad does too and is always, always correcting pronunciation so I am also kind of immune to that. But I thought they went overboard making Janine sound like a "nerd". You can be super smart, use huge words, tend to correct people and still talk much more normal than she did.
