Haha, it is rather nauseating. Yeah, maybe I get Clarence King confused with Laine's King at times and it makes me think they BOTH had King in their names. In Laine's case, probably not.

I just reread Stacey's Emergency and thought Laine was pretty nice in that one. I still don't like her (she just has that "attitude" in my opinion) but it was good to see her being nice to Stacey about her diabetes instead of being awful like it mentioned she was at first. I also reread Truth About Stacey and thought Laine was a jerk at first but was glad she started being better in the end. It hurts so much when your best friend doesn't give you support when you need it most, so I feel for Stacey.

^I liked when Laine brought Stacey all those strange presents like the wind-up toys and the plastic flowers.

Haha, me too. I liked that she bought an individual pair of glasses that happened to fit the gross wind-up spider. I so would have done that!

^I liked when Laine brought Stacey all those strange presents like the wind-up toys and the plastic flowers. I really liked Laine in that book, because that's totally something I would do and something I would love for people to do for me. My best friend just turned 25 and I got her 25 presents, a few serious "nice" ones (a DVD and books) and a bunch of funny ones (toy lizard and dinosaurs, a crucifix-shaped lollipop, etc.) I lovelovelove that kind of shopping - I recently put together a similar package for another friend, with said best friend, and I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. (Look, when one of your best friends in the world looks JUST LIKE JESUS CHRIST, you can't NOT get him the stage-prop crown of thorns, okay?!) On an unrelated note, I used to take a daily bus route that took me past The Last Wound-Up - the pun in the store name, by the way, took me YEARS to get, I am such a dolt sometimes - and I always thought of Stacey's Emergency when I passed it. I never went in, though. I wonder if it's still there. It sounded so cool! Anyway, Laine could be a b*tch, but she could be a really good friend, too. Teenagers for ya!

Nope! I imagine it's gone by now, though, tons of cool little stores like that have been bought out by big-name label stores.

I really liked Laine in Welcome Back Stacey. She didn't seem snobby and was a good friend to Stacey, very understanding and supportive. She actually seemed like a good friend instead of being so cocky. Wish she would have been like that in more books. It seems like Laine is completely opposite people depending on the book. Makes me wonder if the writers just fit her into whatever role they need for that story, if they just don’t care enough about her to keep a consistent character, or if Laine actually behaves so totally different in different books.

I think you're probably right, the GW just fit L into whatever role they need. Although for the sake of enjoyment, I try to picture L as trying to be good but slipping into snobbery until she just gives up trying to be good (Stacey's Ex-BF.)

It's been a long time since I read this, but I seem to remember Stacey making a list comparing the pros and cons of Stoneybrook vs NYC and I think Laine actually encouraged her to pick Stoneybrook because the pros were much longer?

^ She did make a list but Laine didn't use the list to encourage her (unless I'm not remembering right as I reread really fast this time ;D) Laine did kind of encourage her to go back to Stoneybrook, though. (Not that she wanted her to leave - just acted like she wanted what was best for Stacey) I also see the writers fitting Laine to whatever roll. Kind of like Pete and some of the other SMS kids. But I actually prefer viewing her as a snob who sometimes acts human ;D (I "love to hate" her ;D)

^ Totally agree, aln. I liked seeing her as snobby, but deep down inside is actually a good person and cares about her friends. I also agree that before she and Stacey broke-up, she did fill whatever the ghostwriters needed her to fill.
I think she and Stacey would be friends again later on in life. I don't think they'd ever be best friends again, but I can see them hanging out and being casual friends in high school or even university. I don't know where I'm getting all of this from, but it's something I see happening!

I remember Laine voting for Stacey to stay in New York because, "it would be easier" or something. I may be wrong. Anyways, I think that Laine is snobby too, in the sense that she is not tactful towards people because she doesn't think they're worth it.

^ Agree about Laine's reasons for snobbiness. I see her as kind of self centered, like she just doesn't care enough about anyone else to put effort into being nice - espeically to those not "worthy" of her. That contridicts times when she seems like a good friend, though, so I don't know. Of course, maybe Stacey is just "worthy" in those books ;D
