^Yes! Stacey's Problem is the book. The way Laine talks about Claudia is really rude. She basically sides with Stacey (who's since made up with Claud) and goes on to trash talk Claudia, saying she's dumb and that she (Laine) would totally dump a friend for a guy. Here's what Stacey thinks about Laine: This makes me kind of sad for Laine. I'm sure she was nice to Stacey because she was genuinely happy to see her. She probably fell in with the wrong crowd and realized that Stacey was a true friend. But, being Laine, who's too cool for school, she'd never admit that to herself or anyone else. I feel kind of sorry for her. She's probably just so used to being cool and doing what's expected of her that she's forgotten (or never learned) to be her own person. I can see where that would make someone unhappy, even if they don't realize it. I'd like to think Laine realizes that at some point and stops caring about what other people think. *edited for clarity, I was rambling a bit so I cleaned it up a little. I said this in the thread for Stacey's Problem -- I wish I had seen this discussion first! -- but I actually liked Laine more than Stacey there, because I agreed with her observations about Stacey dumping Claudia for a guy and Jeremy being a jerk. Laine was telling it like it is, and Stacey was uncomfortable because she disagreed with Laine's opinions of what Stacey had told her. Maybe Laine's statements weren't the kindest, but they were more honest than Stacey was being about the situation with Claudia and Jeremy.

I have a feeling that the writers wanted to focus on an ex-best friend situation, since it's a popular topic for tweens, and Laine was the best choice seeing as it could be possible, judging on what we know by her character and her personality. She's also a tertiary character so a broken relationship wouldn't affect the club, and essentially the series, as much.
I also feel that Laine was what Stacey was only intensified: like the sophistication had to be MORE; the wealth had to be MORE; the snottiness has to be MORE -- to make her stand apart from Stacey herself. Because "Laine is exactly like me. We're sophisticated and from NYC!" is boring to read.

I never had a good impression of Laine. She just felt like a b*tch from the start. She wasn't really supportive to Stacey - I have no idea how they could stay friends for so long. I mean, Stacey isn't that much like her. LAINE HATERS UNITE!

Laine and Stacey had a lot of history. Their mothers are best friends, after all.
I think that when we see Laine in FF, we get more insight into why she acted the way she did. She seems like she has gotten into partying, drugs etc. I think in Ex-Best Friend, she was all about trying to seem older than she was, and showing some of her own insecurities.

Yeah, I sort of remember Stacey saying something like their mothers were such good friends and it pleased them to see Stacey and Laine spending a lot of time together, too.

I never liked nor disliked Laine when I was first reading the books, but then the only book that I can remember reading that she had a main role in was Stacey's Mistake. I feel like I must have read more than that though. Though I read the New York New York Super Special for the first time last year, and is it just me, or does it seem a bit strange that Laine would just let Kristy and whoever else it was stay over at her place? Like I know she has met them before, but it just seems like it would be a bit awkward for everyone involved, since they didn't know each other that well. It also seems a bit out of character for her to be so willing to host the BSC as well. Like I can't imagine someone like her in real life being so keen to host someone like Kristy for 2 weeks.

Have I mentioned this before? It would have been cool for the New York City Diaries, kind of like the California Diaries, with Laine as the spin-off character; seeing more into her life and friendships in NYC.

I completely agree with this idea. I never read any of the California Diaries, but something tells me that Laine would have gotten into more juicy situations than Dawn and the California crew. It would be interesting to see how Laine acted around her NYC friends when Stacey wasn't around.

I think they would have had to have been YA.

I think it sounds too much like Gossip Girl.

It would have been fun to see Laine interacting with Cokie in Ex-Best Friend when they are all at the dance. I could see them trying to outdo each other. Even though Cokie is a character that we are meant to laugh at and the situation with Laine is meant to be sad, I find their personalities very similar. I would have liked to see her act as a true villain more after the falling out though.

Laine could definitely be a jerk, although the snobbishness I think Stacey noticed only when it was applied to her. Like, from the point of view of say, Jill from CD, or Ashley Wyeth, or Kristy and Mary Anne at certain points, or Tess in that book where Stacey wants to give a makeover; the BSC/WLKC are the snobs. Laine was probably a jerk all along, but Stacey only noticed when she was the target. The diabetes thing, I think, is cruel, but it definitely seems to be a little bit of a fear reaction. None of the adults around Stacey/Laine are reassuring about diabetes, Stacey's own parents basically treated it like it's this shameful secret for the first twenty books or so, which I think explains why Stacey can be quite dramatic about it; and why Laine probably channelled some of the fear over a fellow kid suddenly DEATHLY ILL (in their minds) into seeing it as Stacey attention seeking/being a baby rather than coping with the fears about her friends health.

She seems like she has gotten into partying, drugs etc. I think in Ex-Best Friend, she was all about trying to seem older than she was and showing some of her own insecurities. True...I totally suspect Laine was messing up her life with alcohol, drugs and partying. I can see Laine partying herself out of university, then drifting toward the right-wing, tabloid underworld. That I can see also! Laine also reminds me of Sweet Valley's Lila Fowler and Suzanne Hanlon also. Can you imagine if Lila and Laine met somehow? 😅😅😅 That would be a great laugh seeing each one of those two trying to "prove" that they are the more "sophisticated." Have I mentioned this before? It would have been cool for the New York City Diaries, kind of like the California Diaries, with Laine as the spin-off character; seeing more into her life and friendships in NYC. Yes! I completely agree with this idea. I never read any of the California Diaries, but something tells me that Laine would have gotten into more juicy situations than Dawn and the California crew. It would be interesting to see how Laine acted around her NYC friends when Stacey wasn't around. Definitely! In my timeline, Laine certainly did get herself in the entire juicy mess with the right-wing cults, including the Q-Anon. Laine also started reading and believing tabloids as a teenager, believing herself to be "knowledgeable" about what was "really" going on in the world "behind the scenes." A couple of "friends" would have joined Laine in believing the tabloid fables as "the real truth." I can totally see Laine falling for the "conspiracy" fictions about Lady Diana's untimely, sudden death. Laine would become a *Rump groupie in adulthood...she'd waste lots of time hanging around the *Rump tower in NYC, hoping to spot *Rump and even meet him and butter him up. Later, when *Rump becomes "president," Laine and her fellow cultists follow him to DC. Laine wastes lots of time sending endless e-mails, paper notes and tweets to *Rump, but naturally, he doesn't give her the time of day. Laine marries and divorces several times in adulthood, but thankfully doesn't have kids. Maybe she and most of her "friends" settle in southern Virginia, maybe Richmond and attend several *Rump rallies between 2015 to 2020. Laine and several of her fellow cultists are indirectly involved in the Capital Hill terrorist attack, but Laine escapes while her "friends" are arrested. Laine flees by a stolen car back to New York City, ditches the car at the city once she realizes that the police are after her, runs past Mary Anne and one of her NYC friends, Mona Vaughn and ends up shot when she attempts to assault an officer. It's later when it makes the news that Mary Anne and Mona, who had never met Laine, realizes that it was Laine Cummings who was shot to death. That's my take on Laine's entire sordid story.

I could see Laine turning out okay. I don’t like her by any means, but she comes from a family with wealth so she’s set up for life. She doesn’t seem like the type to blow it all. Probably living in New York or maybe somewhere in Europe. She’s a snob but also a thirteen year old girl that doesn’t know better yet.
