ktag mentioned in the Watson thread that she hasn't seen what Jack looks like, so I thought I'd start a new thread to post the pictures that I just took, and not clutter up Watson's thread with Jack. The hunky Californian dad:

That picture of Dawn as a baby is so cute, too!

Thanks for mentioning Mr. Schafer's name. I couldn't sleep last night trying to remember it. Does the top picture look to anyone else like something from the '40s or '50s? For some reason, I remember that I never liked him much because I thought of him as kind of a "player" and maybe a little irresponsible. I'm not sure why and it probably isn't accurate. Someone mentioned in the Watson thread that they wondered what Sharon was thinking by ending up with Richard and I have to admit that I would probably be more attracted to the Richard lawyer type than the cute surfer type. I'll have to read some more books about Dawn in CA and check out some more of the pictures though. I'm making my judgements of Jack based on memories from when I read the books years ago and probably not giving him a fair shot.

I imagined him as irresponsible as well, for some reason. After the divorce, his ex-wife moved clear across the country with his two children and presumably, he was perfectly okay with it. Right from day one, he had a full time housekeeper, even before Dawn and Jeff lived with him. Do your own d**n housework, dude. Women who work full time manage it. Surely the money he spent on employing Mrs Bruen could've gone towards child support or something.
I just finished reading Dawn and Whitney, Friends Forever and this was discussed in that thread, but why did he feel the need to hook up with someone almost immediately after (briefly) breaking up with Carol? Is it really in your kids best interests to expose them to what? Five potential girlfriends in the space of a few weeks? Fatherhood didn't seem a particularly high priority to Jack in some circumstances.

I think Dawn described him as a "Disneyland dad" in some book. I think that he was supposed to be the fun dad, not really a parent-ish type.

I remembered this quote too and think it was what gave me my opinion of him. I think he was more interested in being the kids buddy than a dad. Maybe that's why Jeff had a hard time adjusting to Richard and wanted to move back to CA.

Dawn's dad strikes me as the cool dad all her friends would be jealous of, but the kinda guy that wouldn't be so awesome to actually HAVE as a dad. I bet Dawn's friends had crushes on him

I hated how he had a housekeeper! Like, WTF, he can't manage to clean up after himself and his 9 year old son? So lame. But, wow, he looks nice in those pictures!

yeah, i remember thinking he was cute (for a dad) in those pics in dawns portrait. hes probably the most attractive dad of all of the bsc members, hahha.
he seemed pretty cool most of the time, except he seemed kind of mean to sharon in dawns portrait, but i guess if i were married to sharon, i would go crazy. and i didnt like the way he dated all those women in the book with whitney, that was totally lame.

I think him having a housekeeper just plays into the fact he's depicted as such a bachelor who can barely take care of himself and is too concerned about having fun to be all that responsible.

If you can afford a housekeeper and don't like housework then what's wrong with having one? If he had Mrs. Bruen or whatever her name was before Jeff came back then it's not like he just hired her so he wouldn't have to pay attention to him. It would make even less sense for him to fire the housekeeper when his kid moved back in. Someone had to watch Jeff while he was at work. Would it have been more responsible to hire the We Love Kids Club every day?

When Jeff was all angsty and wanted to move back, Mr. Schafer was like "weeelll...I'd have to hire a housekeeper..." I didn't really have a problem with his hiring a housekeeper. I just thought it was odd that he was so reluctant to have his kid live with him again. Dawn was so upset and made a big deal about Jeff not being with them and how hurt Sharon must be. Then she goes and does the same thing. How much did Mr. Schafer actually want them?

I don't knock him for having a housekeeper if he can afford it, but it seemed like he used his housekeeper as like, Jeff's new surogate mom.
