^ I think that one the reasons that people think that Jack is a terrible dad is because he didn't put up a fight when Sharon moved with Dawn and Jeff to Connecticut.

^People also give him crap because he hired a housekeeper. Apparently it's fine to have a family member move in and do the same stuff for free (Aunt Cecelia and Nanny), but if you have the money to pay someone to do it then you're lazy and a bad parent. Or something like that.

To be fair to Jack, in all likelihood Ann saw him as another adult male throw-a-way character or at least one that came across in less than positive ways. In later books he actually seemed reminiscent of Ed McGill, but more laid back. I still would have liked to have read about his views on his kids moving to CT. Oh well.
Is there (probably) a Dad's thread?

I think it's because unlike with Andrew, Emily Michelle or Squirt, Jeff can be left at home by himself and be fine. They need a babysitter a lot more than he does. For example, after school, Jeff can make himself a snack while he's home alone while Andrew, Emily Michelle or Squirt can't do that. I think that's why people give him crap about hiring a housekeeper.

He kind of got on my nerves in that he let Carol do a lot of the emotional work helping the Winslows in California Diaries, like Carol's being a second mom to Sunny and doing the grunt work of assisting them when Betsy passes; and all we hear that Jack (who knew them decades before he even met Carol) does is bring food. With that and his talking about how Carol needed to settle down etc, and the housekeeper when Jeff moves in; he definitely came across like he had certain expectations from women. (Particularly when he complains about how she's young, like, you're the guy who picked a woman who's what, a decade, two decades younger?)

Just this I really agree with, you reminded me just how much I'm not a big fan of Jack. He seems like a nice dad and all but he just comes off as kind of an over grown frat boy (thank you sotypical on page 2).
