Opinions on the infamous prankster? I thought he was an interesting shadowy character, like the writers were trying to create someone with a bit of depth. I used to think he was kinda lame, but his love of codes and games and mysteries is kind of cool to me now. I think I read somewhere he comes back in the FF series and has conflict with Kristy but I can't be sure...maybe I'm thinking of Alan.

You're right. That was Kristy Power!. Cary was one of the few intriguing characters inroduced later in the series.

I hate Cary Retlin. He's so smug and self-satisfied. I especially hate him in Kristy In Charge. He encourages the kids to screw around and not listen to Kristy, then blames her for their class being a disaster. I want to smack him on the cover.

I remember him being introduced in Stacey & Haunted Masquerade. Him leaning back on his chair and winking at Stacey bugged me. Although, I did kind of feel sorry for him in Abby & Secret Society. He only took the after-school job because he needed the money. Aw.

Isn't it in Stacey and the Stolen Secrets that Stacey goes looking for Cary and finds him in the boiler room? He has his own lounge set up there because he and the custodian have "an arrangement". That was so strange and random. It also made me hate Cary even more. I don't know why.

After Mary Anne's Revenge I really wanted Cary and Mary Anne to get together.

I love Cary. And now in the rpg I'm in where I play Stacey, we have them dating. Weird pairing, I know, but it works, and now I live through him winking at her twice in Stacey and the Haunted Masquerade for my dose of canon Stacey/Cary.
I love the part in Baby-Sitters Fright Night where he tries to play a trick on Kristy only to have Kristy and Alan turn it around on him. Alan seems so proud to have pulled one over on Cary.
LLT, do you mean "Stacey and the Stolen Hearts"? I haven't read that one, but now I want to!

I suppose I do.
Aren't you a Pete Black fan? He's in the book quite a bit. This time he's moving in on Emily Bernstein. Is there a girl in the eighth grade that he didn't date?

cary's my favorite character in the series. i thought he was one of the characters with the most depth, and i liked how the authors tried to bring that out (or in my opinion, anyway). cary is love. hehe.

I'm liking Cary better in Kristy Power! than I did in the regular series.

^ That's the only book I've read about him in. And I admit, he seems like a pretty cool character.

I'm rereading Kristy and the Cat Burglar right now and Cary is better in this one than Middle School Vandal but I still don't like him. Something about him just makes me uncofortable, like he can't be trusted. I also didn't care for him in MA and the Silent Witness. Does he ever show up in a non-mystery book? I vaguely remember Stacey seeing him for the first time at school and thinking he was cute when he first came to town in Haunted Masquerade but can't remember him being in any regular series books.

^He was. I can't remember offhand which ones. I haven't read very many mysteries yet so I know it was regular series I read about him in.

He's in "Kristy in Charge" which is a regular book, when they do a student-teaching program and he and Kristy co-teach gym. It's fun seeing them together but Cary doesn't seem like the type to want to teach gym to me. Well, anyway, it's a book where if you hate Cary, you'll still hate him in this. I found him kind of fun though.

Thanks. Can't believe I forgot about that one. Cary was a real jerk in it, too, and really bugged me. You're right, lauren, that he doesn't seem like the jock-type who would like gym and I also did find him funnier in this book than usual. I almost wish the girls in the BSC would dislike Cary a little more since I find him so annoying I don't know what it is but he just seems devious and like he can't be trusted - almost kind of creepy.
