i absolutely adore ashley i definitely don't see her as snobby. i may be slightly biased (i played her in the rpg) buttt... shes not snobby. i did a lot of research about that girl and different disorders... i think ashley definitely had something going on... i'm no expert, and granted, my ashley was a lot more developed than the bsc ashley (i really don't consider the ghostwritten ashley to be ashley) but aspergers and borderline were both something i think ashley could have-- probably more aspergers in the book. oh, i just love her. now i miss her a lot ahaha.

Ashley seemed a little obsessed with her art but I think that she could've made it as an artist.

So true. Remember Claudia's "Under the Sea" outfit in Claudia & the Middle School Mystery? But she's an exotic beauty and thin and Ashley isn't. So Claudia can get away with pushing the boundaries.

Even as a kid, I felt that Ashley was the antithesis of the BSC in Claudia and the New Girl. She was just written as a contrast or a way to get a character who is "the other". Kind of like what happened with Shannon in the previous book. Or remember the Babysitting Agency? Or Cokie Mason? There's always an "other" out to get them.
In WSTO, she kind of looks like a man on the cover to me. Like a pretty, hippie guy with long hair. And on the cover of New Girl, she looks a little Amish with lumberjack boots. So I was always like, "Girl! What's up with your outfits?"

aspergers and borderline were both something i think ashley could have-- probably more aspergers in the book. oh, i just love her. now i miss her a lot ahaha. I could see Ashley having Asperger's Syndrome, because she has some lack of empathy (I'm pretty sure a lot of other people could see a benefit in babysitting and acknowledge that kids are important - does she really expect a friend to give her interest up, just like that? How does she think Claudia would feel about it?), poor social skills (Kristy writes "Everyone at school thinks Ashley is really weird" - maybe it's how she dresses, or how she's only interested in art, but she doesn't seem to be interested in making friends at all) and has specialized interests (I don't think Ashley's defining trait needs any explanation). She doesn't exhibit any other behaviours, but those tendencies are enough for her to be on the autism spectrum. Ashley is also very talented in visual arts. A talent at that high level is not a symptom, but people on the spectrum often do have one unusually strong talent, like artist Andy Warhol and scientist Albert Einstein. To add to that, people on the spectrum - that is, mildly affected - tend to gravitate towards others who are similar. I suspect Ashley's friend in Chicago who she mentioned was very much like her. If we were to take ghostwriter-Ashley into account, it might be a sign that she was aware of her problems with social interaction and specialized interests, and that she was trying to change. Maybe she'd been diagnosed?

I feel for Ashley. She's pretty irritating, but I'm reading the Winter Vacation SS and Ashley has it kind of rough. She can't find anyone willing to bunk with her, then Kristy finally agrees, but then the BSC immediately switches out again. But since they put Ashley and Kristy between the other girls, Ashley is now surrounded by a perfect circle of empty bunks. That can't be easy, no matter how unfriendly she can be.

I liked Ashley, but maybe that was in reaction to how horrible the rest of the club were in that particular book. She definitely behaved nicer to Claudia than they did, like, yeah, she could be patronising, and she didn't like kids; but then she didn't come over to Claudia's house to eat her food and leave her hate notes, so swings and roundabouts... I could see how she'd be a bit much as a friend, but when they're being all catty about how she dresses and stuff, ugh. Pot calling the kettle black.
