He reminds me of what Mr. Spiers probably looked like when he was Ben's age.

I just read Mystery Train and Ben acted totally out of character at the Greenbriar (I think that's the name) club. It was really weird, almost like they mixed him up with James or something, even though James was on the train with Derek and Kristy. He was playing with the much younger kids - basically on their level - and lumped in with one of the charges. He also participated in the contests with the kids, never mentioned him even talking to Mal and was made out to be friends with Shea Rowdowsky. At one point, he even teased Stephen about being scared of the water, which seemed really out of character for Ben (or any of the Hobarts). This was really strange and I wonder if they mixed him up with another character. Anyone else notice this?

^ That bugged me too even though I'm not from Australia. I was just curious if Ben got picked on, too. I know his brothers did but wasn't sure about Ben. Was it ever mentioned?

I remember reading that ben was tall so no one bothered him or something along those lines.

I haven't ever read that book - they really had him being friends with Shea? I mean Shea is only 2 years younger but that is super strange.

^ It was very strange. Seemed like a huge inconsistency, too, especially since Ben is usually a nice guy but was picking on Stephen. It was the only time they made it out like he was a charge and hanging out with Shea, so I think it was definitely a mistake of some kind. I hope at least ;D

I remember reading that ben was tall so no one bothered him or something along those lines. Yeah, apparently because he's tall, he's not someone you want to mess with. I guess that makes sense to an extent, but...I'm tall, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't mess with me. I'm pretty non-threatening. I generally liked Ben, but I couldn't stand his behaviour in Here Comes the Bridesmaids. He totally blew up over the entire situation and was a complete ass about it. True, Mal didn't really help matters by getting mad at him, but I can see why she did. Other than that, I liked him. I wondered why the didn't make him another associate member of the club. He was good with kids, so he could've been useful. They could've called on him to help out if they were booking too many afternoon/day jobs and wanted to free up the older girls for a night job. I don't know if I'd really want an eleven-year-old boy (well, or a girl) to sit for my children, but in BSC Land, I'm sure the parents would've loved him.

^They start to treat him more like a charge in some of the later books I've read.

^ Then there is that weird inconsistency when he actually is a charge and friend of Shea's. ;D Weird.... I wish he would have been considered almost a sitter and maybe would have become an associate.

I like Ben. He seemed like a normal kid and a normal boyfriend, instead of being like Logan, who was supposed to be the perfect boyfriend. It's weird how at first, he was Mallory's boyfriend and later, he's viewed as a charge.

This may be controversial, but a small part of me thinks that Ben was purposely written in as the "dorky, nerdy, cute, good boyfriend" so that girls would actually look at the guys who were worthwhile, sensitive and caring. Ben was an example to tween girls that you don't have to be a hot jock to be a good catch. Also, girls like Mallory could have successful relationships with "boys like them". I seriously thought that Mallory and Ben were like brother and sister sometimes. They even looked like twins. So their relationship was not always that serious to me. They always seemed more like friends. And Ben seems like the kind of guy who might be a bit confused later in life

^haha, yeah, Ben and Mel-ry seem to go against the evolutionary thing where you're supposed to date someone genetically different than you so your offspring will be healthier.

Interesting fact, Katie. I had no idea that the last thylacine actually had a name and that it lived in the Hobart zoo (the name of the zoo was never mentioned).
