So Alma's maiden name was Baker, which I find amusing because she obviously is a good one, as they make this big deal about her chocolate-cherry cake (mmm) when Mary Anne and Claudia are in the Battle of the Bakers. However, I just know I read in one book (maybe MA and the Secret in the Attic) where they talk about a certain cake she was famous for, but not chocolate-cherry. Kristy is talking to her mom about when MA was a baby, and her mom mentions that MA's mom brought over an applesauce cake when the Thomases moved in. And then MA later on is like, "I think I'll make the cake for my dad one day, the recipe must still be around here somewhere." Would that recipe have taken home first prize? Anyway. I'm bored and thought I'd post that

I knew an Alma once. She was Mexican, so it always stuck in my head that Mary Anne's mom should be Hispanic. That would have been interesting actually. They didn't have any bi-racial kids in Stoneybrook.

^ Well, there's at least one biracial child in Stoneybrook. Stephen Stanton-Cha's father is Asian and his mother is a blonde Caucasian whose father didn't speak to her for ten years after she married a Korean man. I don't know if there are any others.

sparklymouse, the only Alma I know is also Hispanic! I always imagined MA's mom as looking like that one illustration in Mary Anne's Book, though.

I know a few Almas of Mexican descent as well. I love those illustrations of her in Mary Anne's Book sitting in a rocking chair, and in another one sewing. So pretty!

the illustrations of Alma as well. She looked like a really pretty women. Those pictures also gave off the impression of warmth and love, in my opinion.

Don't you think they would have said something, though? Like, "Mary Ann is half Mexican, but nobody talks about it. Besides, we're cool with diversity. Did I mention Jessi's BLACK?"

Gasp, Jessi's black? But it is kinda weird that their was barely any Hispanics in the series since their is alot here in Oregon, as well as California.

Yeah, actually, that is weird. I mean, it's not strange that there aren't any in Stoneybrook because it's an upper/upper middle class small town in the middle of Connecticut, but Dawn didn't have any Latino or Asian friends in California, nor did Stacey have any more diverse friends in New York.

Actually, I almost wrote a really long rambly post about that awhile ago (well, about race and multiculturalism in the BSC in general--it mostly showed that I miss being in school, I think!), and I think I mentioned it on some other thread. There are a couple of teachers at SMS with names that could be Hispanic (Mrs. Gonzalez and the one in the Fright Night mystery, I think) and the Martinez family from Mary Anne and the Silent Witness. Someone reminded me that Dawn has a Latina friend in the California Diaries, but I never read those so I don't know anything about her.

Dawn's Latina friend was Amalia. She seemed pretty cool.

I always picture MA's mom as being Mexican too! I agree, there seriously needed to be more diversity in Stoneybrook.
