I didn't mean to be offensive with my comments, either, Starlett. I also don't like it when people judge others and stereotype them based on looks. I think my point was that if they wanted to show MA as a latina, they would have made her "look" (stereotypically) latina. I agree that Alma sounds more old fashioned as a name than anything. It does remind me of Verna, too. ;D

janey and aln, it's okay guys, sorry I got defensive! No hard feelings! <3 Just to let you know where I was coming from -- I have light skin too (in fact, I look a lot like Mary Anne, just with green eyes), and I suppose I associate that with having Irish/Scottish/Welsh heritage. I don't even know what MA's heritage is, but I guess that's a stereotype, too -- to claim that you can only have light skin depending on where your family is from.

Speaking of MA's mom, I found it interesting that one of the books mentioned that she played bball in college. I see her as being a quiet, unathletic type but maybe she wasn't. Maybe MA inherited that from Richard. Too bad we (and MA) didn't know more about Alma.

Hey, in #4 Mary Anne saves the day, Mary Anne says her mothers name is Abigail, when in the series did they start naming her Alma?

^Really? I just checked and in the first chapter or so, when Richard & MA say grace, Richard mentions Alma's name. Unless she slips up and it's mentioned in Abigail somewhere else. Although...a few chapters later, MA tells Dawn that her mother grew up in Maryland.

Maybe MA inherited that from Richard. Too bad we (and MA) didn't know more about Alma. My mom was on her high school basketball team, and she's not very athletic.

^ I know that is possible. College is usually a little different, though, but I guess it could have been a small school and she might have just been on the team and mostly sat the bench. I just think it would be interesting if MA's mom was an "athlete" and wonder how her and MA would have interacted then. Maybe she would have developed a close relationship with Kristy. Now I'm getting sad wishing she woudn't have died.....

^ but then richy and sharon wouldn't have gotten married? ? well... of course ann could've just made them get divorced... my high school was pretty competitive about sports... at least... the basketball tryouts were pretty intense... and i tried out... and i sucked, but I got to be a manager...and was in the team picture, and was in the yearbook with them... so it wasn't too bad

^ I never thought of Richard and Sharon not getting married, then. I wouldn't have wanted him and Alma to get divorced but do like him with Sharon so that wouldn't have worked. Interesting possibilities, though...

They went back and changed it to Alma, just like the Sheila and Kendall thing

The only Alma I've ever known was from the Philippines (where I'm half from).
During one of those random mid-mass baptisms we had to sit through in church, a couple came up and named their kid Norbert cus the mom's name was NORma and the dad's name alBERT. I figured if they ever had a girl, they could use the remaining letters in their names and call it ALMA. Har.

^ Agree. ;D That sounds like a character's name from the BSC. ;D I wish we knew more about MA's mom. Actually, I wish MA knew more about her mom, too. I get the feeling that she doesn't feel comfortable talking to people about her to find out more. I wonder if she was friends with Elizabeth or any of the other women in the neighborhood.

^ According to Elizabeth, Alma brought over a cake for them when the Thomases moved in and helped her unpack... if Alma had lived they probably would have gotten to be good friends.
