Perhaps I'll be the minority on this, but did anyone else find it to be a bit strange that Sharon and Richard knew absolutely nothing about what the other had been doing for the past twelve or more years, before Mary Anne and Dawn met? Especially it terms of Sharon not knowing anything about Richard. Sharon's parents still lived in Stoneybrook. Surely she must have visted them at least a few times over the years, and she might have still had contact with other people she grew up with. Even if they didn't live in the same part of Stoneybrook (since she was rich and he was poor), it's a fairly small town. Wouldn't she have been curious about how her high school sweetheart was doing? And wouldn't have people known about Richard, since his wife had died. No one said "Richard's raising his daughter alone, his wife passed away a few years ago." It just always seemed a bit odd to me.
Also, I don't remember this, did any book mention whether or not Dawn and Jeff had been to Stoneybrook prior to the divorce? Didn't they ever visit their grandparents and see where their mom had grown up?

It is kind of odd now that you mention it. Maybe it's just a plot device though.

Didn't they visit their grandparents in Dawn's Portrait? I seem to remember a pic of them eating dinner together. Maybe that took place in CA.

The visit in Dawn's Book was in CA - San Francisco, I think. For some reason, I always got the impression that Dawn and Jeff never came to Stoneybrook, but that is weird now that I think about it. Also assumed that Richard was kind of a Taboo subject for the Porter/Schafers so that never really surprised me that he wasn't mentioned.

I agree with aln, the Porters probably never even mentioned him after they worked so hard to get their daughter away from him. It makes me wonder how she broke the news to them that she was seeing him again. I know that in the Impossible Three, Pop-Pop practically grilled him and Granny watched him like a hawk, but I wonder how Sharon actually said "Oh by the way, remember the guy you moved me to California to get away from? yeah, I'm dating him again suckers!!"

Remember when Sharon and Richard meet again and Richard asks her if she'd like to go to dinner sometime and she answers all immediately, "I'd love to, when??" I always supposed another reason for moving back was to see him again. She also gets dreamy when Dawn questions her about him before they re-meet. So I suppose it did seem strange to me that she didn't know much at all about what had happened in the life of someone she still thought so fondly of after all those years. Especially considering he was still living in the town they grew up in, the town her parents still live in. I figured Granny and Pop-Pop didn't tell her anything because they didn't care too much for him in general and she just didn't press them for anything more for whatever reasons.

I always wondered if Granny and Pop-Pop changed their opinion of Richard now that he was a successful lawyer. Did the books ever mention that or any interaction between Richard and them?

^ I forget which book it was but it was when the grandparents were invited to some event in the Spier's backyard. The grandparents thought that Richard still worked for some law firm and not making that much but were pleasantly surprised that Richard was actually doing quite well and had started his own firm or something.

I think that was the Impossible Three. They were really suspicious about him and junk at first, until he said that. But that was in the Schafer's backyard though

I really liked Sharon and Richard in Dawn's Big Move. When they are together, I can see how she got him to loosen up a lot - or maybe he is just happier. I think they make a great couple even though they're total opposites.

i dunno... i think part of it is that it was a taboo topic for the others and then the fact that sharon had moved on. when i get a new man i don't really think about my old ones anymore but maybe i am particularly cold-hearted . i am surprised that no one who also stayed in the brook said to sharon, "richie's wife died." but then again how do we know she didn't know? how do we know that her motivation in part was not to reconnect with richard spier, sexy man that we all know he is? ?

A question about Stacey’s family got me thinking about Sharon’s siblings. Does she have any? If so, why weren’t they at her wedding or Granny and Pop Pop’s anniversary celebrations? I know Richard’s parents are dead but what about his siblings? Did it ever mention specifically that Sharon was an only child? That could be a point she might be able to relate to Stacey or MA on. Interesting thought there…. Now I have all kinds of questions suddenly about the characters’ extended families ;D

i would think not, since granny and pop pop seemed so protective of her.

Well who was Amy? Her parents must've been somehow related to Sharon right? Or were they just a friend? We never really hear Dawn or MA mention cousins so it's possible neither have any.
