Any thoughts on Janine's boyfriend? I never really liked him and always thought he sounded like a jerk. Even from the start of their relationship in Mystery at Claudia's, he likes her "in spite of how she looks". I know what he meant but still.... Then acts like a total jerk in European Vacation. Maybe I'm just relating him to this guy I know, but Jerry makes me think of one of those smart people who knows and likes to think how smart they are to the point where they kind of look down on others. I don't see Janine doing this with correcting people but I get the feeling from Jerry that he feels superior and is kind of cocky. Confidence is one thing, but I feel like Jerry is arrogant. But like I said, that might just be my impression of him because he reminds me of someone I know who is cocky. Was Jerry ever described? Curious what he looks like and can't remember.

Just read in the complete guide that Jerry is "not conceited" but I wonder if this is one of the things that the books "tell us" instead of "showing us" about a character, if you know what I'm talking about. Or maybe I'm just being too judgmental of Jerry. Conceited or not, though, he still seems like kind of a jerk to me.

I never liked him either. He was introduced badly with Janine's comments. I always got the impression (false or not) that he kinda felt he was doing Janine a favor by being with her.

His only really prominent part was in European Vacation, I think, and yeah, I found him really annoying in that. As for looks, aln, he is supposedly this really gorgeous guy.

Glad to see I'm not alone on Jerry. I got the same feeling as you, sotypical. For some reason, I don't picture him as all that good looking but I think he thinks he is ;D

I think in Mystery at Claudia's House, Claudia and co. saw Janine get in Jerry's sports car and they all thought that he was so cute. I never really liked him either. I liked the part where Claudia was all like, "Janine keeps dumping him, the guy just can't take a hint."

Was Jerry Asian? I can't remember if they mention it.

^ I was wondering that same thing since I know Claud mentions that her parents liked it when she dated Asian guys so can see them being happier about Janine having an Asian boyfriend than non-Asian. But I don't think Jerry was. Not sure, though. I'll have to check some of the books with him in it - especially Mystery at Claudia's House.

I was going to ask the same thing! I have always pictured him as Asian.

I never did... if he were Asian, i think Ann/ghostwriter would have given him an obviously Asian name, or made some sort of big deal about. Because that is just the way BSC books roll.

Was Jerry Asian? I can't remember if they mention it. ^ But his last name is "Michaels." (I dunno. I probably totally missed something here. I didn't read through the whole thread, even though it is short.)

Ugh, Jerry was such a pr*ck, excuse my language! He was a cocky bastard! Idk, at first he was alright, but yeah the whole thing about liking Janine in spite of her looks was horrible, I mean if he didn't care about looks why the hell did he bring it up? He was a complete douche in European Vacation, talk about passive aggressive, I thought Mary Anne was bad but this guy is something else. I think you're right, aln, he was so smart and good looking that he thought it gave him authority to look down on others, which is so not cool. They never mentioned Jerry's ethnicity but I too got the impression that he was Japanese, actually I thought he was half Japanese, half Caucasian from the way he was described but in BSC land either you're OMG ASIAN or you're not, lol!

I never thought of him as Asian at all. I always pictured him having black hair and blue eyes for some reason.

I actually pictured him looking like Dean Cain for some reason.

Was he somehow involved with Claudia and the Lighthouse Ghost? Or they thought he might be. Yeah, that made him sound like a real prize--harassment is totally true luv! (I seriously can't remember--did he keep calling the Kishi house while that other family was there?)
He really was awful in European Vacation, too. I sort of get a vibe that he almost expected Janine to be grateful to him just for being interested, or something--like he couldn't believe that quiet, serious, "plain" Janine would stand up to him and not let him walk all over that. I've known some guys like that; they actually go after girls who for whatever reason don't get a lot of attention from guys or just don't have very much romantic experience, and sometimes the girls are so surprised to have someone pursuing them they accept bad behavior on the guys' parts. (I had a semi-boyfriend like that my freshman year in college--he was a grad student at another school, and he really liked to play up how "experienced" he was and stuff.)
