So in Kristy's Big News, patrick marries a new wife, Zoey. Whether or not Patrick had been married in between was always kind of a gray area in BSC books--sometimes he was married to someone else, sometimes not--but regardless, it seems like a pretty stupid move to marry someone who had abandoned a wife and 4 (or is it 3 ;?) children. A lot of KBN indicated that not much had changed in terms of Patrick. What do you guys think of this marriage?

I actually liked Zoey. She wasn't a flake like I had expected. Kristy, Charlie, and Sam liked her too and probably wondered what on earth she saw in Patrick. ;D She didn't seem like the gullible type so I think Patrick had changed somewhat. Still, if it were me, I'd always be weary of a guy who walked out on his wife and four children.

I liked Zoey and thought she deserved better. But even though she seemed pretty intelligent and mature in a lot of ways, and like a fun, sweet person (I enjoyed her rapport with Kristy, and admired the respectful, straightforward way she approached Charlie), I think she was either naive or blinded by love when it came to Patrick. She tells Kristy that she thinks Patrick has grown up and learned from his mistakes, but his behavior in this very book makes it clear, IMO, that isn't the case--if it were, he wouldn't be nearly so petulant or rude to Charlie, for one thing, who at seventeen pulls himself together and ultimately acts with tons more grace and character than his father demonstrates. If Patrick had changed, he would understand at least some of the impact abandoning his children has had on them, and he wouldn't be so thoughtless and insensitive about it. He would have the grace to at least feel some remorse. And for heavens sake, he tantrums and pouts like a three-year-old when they go to rent tuxes! (And it's interesting that Patrick's only brother hates him so much that he won't show up at the wedding either, hmm?)
So I feel bad for Zoey, but on the other hand, she's got an awful lot of evidence she's choosing to ignore, and I would be very surprised if this marriage worked out. Patrick just is still too immature and selfish to make that kind of commitment to another person, IMO. But then, while I have a weakness for romantic gestures (I finally saw Once and OMG I am Mary Anne with the crying), I am also one of those Nasty People who says love is not enough--relationships take a lot of other, less glamourous stuff, too.

I haven't read anything about Zoey because don't want to read the FF series but I can see how someone would be fooled by Patrick, even if he hadn't really "changed" but said he did. Can also see how someone would try to overlook his faults and marry him in spite of his past. He could have blamed Elizabeth and told a million other stories and tales to explain why he had abandoned his family. I've known lots of people like that - one line after another. Anyway, Zoey sounds like a pretty interesting character. Maybe I will have to read this one.

I hate Zoey
i don't feel bad for her at ALL. she knows EXACTLY what she's getting into with patrick, she doesn't overlook anything and isn't fooled by anything. she tells kristy that she knows how patrick is and she doesn't necessarily condone his behavior but apparently she accepts it, which is pathetic.
then again, i think some of my zoey-hatred stems from my patrick-hatred. it bothers me to no end how happy he is with her and how he is going to start a new family with her when he still has a family that he left! arrrgh!

^I do hate how Patrick completely ignored David Michael. He wouldn't even get on the phone and explain why he wasn't inviting him to the wedding! Maybe it was because DM was too young, but Patrick should have told him himself! I also felt bad for Watson when David Michael was whining "I wanna go to California. He's my real father!" Watson is the only father David Michael has known. I can't believe Patrick and Zoey were talking about having kids of their own!

I liked Zoey. I think she deserves better than Patrick. I think that in Kristy Power, Kristy says that Patrick called to invite her and her siblings over for Thanksgiving but she thinks he called because Zoey made him.
