Today is stepdad day (saw it on 123greetings.com ;D) and this makes me think about all of the good ones in the BSC books - Richard, Watson, Seth (in the LS books) and Franklin. I know it's not realistic that the stepdads are great but it's enjoyable for me to read about and gives me a hopeful feeling. ;D I do find it a nice contrast to the usual portrayal of the abusive, evil stepdad.

Agreed, if for no other reason than it's such a tired cliche to have the evil stepparent.

And I always like reading about postive, happy things in the BSC books. Such a great escape from real life and puts me in a good mood. ;D At least there are some great stepdads because some of the BSC fathers are definitely not the best.....

I think they had a good balance with the step-parents in the BSC - they weren't unpleasant or cold, but they weren't extremely close to their stepchildren, either (Watson might be an exception, but his relationship with Kristy took a long time to build up). One of the most believable aspects of the books, IMO.

I thought of another good thing about the books including positive examples of stepparents. I know a lot of kids are very worried when their parents get remarried that they will end up with a horrible stepparent but the books might give them hope. "Hey, maybe Mom will marry Watson." ;D Kids do have enough examples of bad ones to relate to so maybe the BSC helps reduce anxiety about remarriage. That would definitely be a positive thing. ;D

I always liked the stepfathers in the books actually, I agree I think that they provided a positive example of a stepfathers, or stepparents in general. I think my favorite one is though Watson, I always liked his relationship with Kristy, it was realistic and I always enjoy reading about it.

Also, with Kristy and Watson it made more sense for them to be close, I think. Watson became Kristy's "real" dad, while Mary Anne and Dawn's biological fathers were still in the picture.

I always thought that too. I just read "Babysitters Beware" and Kristy mentioned that her real dad left, and she didn't want Watson to disappear like her real father did".

Mary Anne didn't have a stepfather though, and her biological mom WASN'T in the picture. I think that the Schafer/Spier family life was just really tumultuous--Dawn and Jeff kept leaving and then the house burnt down.

Agree with both McKay and Greer. I think Watson had to replace Kristy's dad who wasn't in the picture and the more tumultuous life and personality differences also added distance to Jeff and Dawn's relationship with Richard. I think the turmoil also did a lot to keep MA and Sharon apart, as did MA's reluctance to let her in, maybe because she didn't want to replace her mom or her idea of one.

also i can see mary anne feeling weird about having another woman in her dad's life, especially since she was an only child. i can see kristy just wanting to see her mom happy--not that mary anne didn't want richard to be happy, but i can see it being a bit harder for her.

^ Agree about MA feeling weird with another woman. I'm kind of possessive of my dad too. ;D

In Kristy's Portrait their is an illustration of Watson giving Kristy a baseball glove and at the bottom of the page Kristy writes "A gift from a father I can trust." ;D

^ That is one of my favorite parts of that book and one of my favorite Kristy/Watson moments. It's good Kristy has a great stepdad since her own dad is such a jerk....

^ I agree. Watson always seemed like a top-notch stepdad to me, who cared about his stepkids just as much as his biological kids I love corniness like that
