I got the idea for this thread from a post in one of the threads (I think it was on boyfriends). What are the thoughts on the middle school guys of Stoneybrook? (I know there are threads for Sam and Charlie so that's why I made this one for middle schoolers) I really like Logan, Ben and Alan and don't mind Pete in some books but wish we knew more about him. I also like Josh okay but not as a match for Claudia since he seems to young for her. I don't like Cary at all and don't like Bart much, either, (though I'm not sure why on him) Cary just gives me the creeps (as I've said in many other threads ;D) What are everyone else's thoughts on the boys?

Cary bugs me. And the boys who are dating the girls in general, aka, Logan, Ben, Quint, etc, are altogether too mushy! I like them alright, I mean, but what 13- and 11-year-olds act like that? My mom's friend's son, who is in my sister's class (grade 7 - he's 12), well he thinks girls are ew. Oh, he's had a couple 'girlfriends' (makes me laugh ;D) but generally I think it was because the girls bugged him so much that he just 'went out with them' to shut them up ;D wow, funny to think that all the little kids I know.. well, I still think of them as little kids, like my sister and her friends - are the same age as the BSC members, cuz they sure don't act like it! Now I know my sister would jump at the chance for a 'boyfriend' - if my parents would let her, lol. But still - what boys at that age are that lovey? The girls, I could see - my sister is pretty mature for her age, though not quite as much so as the girls in the BSC - but not the boys. Boys take a lot longer than that to grow up (in most cases, anyway).

^ The fact that the boys are too mature in the books is what is appealing to me. ;D The fantasy aspect of it. ;D

I hate Logan and Mary Anne's relationship- I think it's way too unrealistic. I had a boyfriend when I was 13 and all we did was talk on the phone and occasionally get dropped off at the movie theaters by our moms and meet up there. I certainly didn't think about him all the time or write mushy love letters to him.

Most of the time I found most of the middle school boys too mature. Although their were times where I felt they acted their age, like playing with their food in the cafeteria. Although, I think boys at any age still do that. I didn't really have any strong feelings towards any of them either way. Although even though Alan annoyed me I still liked him. I actually felt like sometimes his acting up was him trying to get attention or maybe he felt alone. Although that is me probably reading too much into things!

I think you have a point, I think Alan did feel pretty lonely at times. He indicates in later books that everyone expects him to be just the class clown, like he never has any serious feelings. People dismissed him a lot, and I'll bet he felt pretty frustrated at times. I guess I liked Logan the best out of the middle school boys when I was younger, because I did accept what the BSC told me about him--sweet, understanding, not your stereotypical jock, etc. But now I'm just sort of bored by him He really doesn't seem all that interesting compared to other characters like Ethan, Bart, Cary, etc. I like the other boy characters a lot better than him now...

Yay for this thread! Like I said in the Cary Retlin/BSC members thread, I like Cary and Alan much more than the other guys. As someone said upthread, the BSC boyfriends were so unrealistic and serious about their relationships! I was re-reading 'Island Adventure' and when Logan goes, 'I can't believe you would think I would stand you up' to MA- Well, it's a more natural conclusion than that there's a medical emergency in your family. When I was twelve, 'dating' was just saying you were going out with someone and just hanging around with them at school (and then hugging/holding hands if you were daring enough). Seriously, when you're twelve, unless you're dedicated, there isn't much you can do. Candle-lit dinners aren't exactly realistic. (I won't even start on Quint's chin-tipping kiss with Jessi in NY, NY!) I think Logan is really, really, boring, but he suits MA because he can be sensitive/romantic enough for her. *lol* I complain a lot. I do like Ben, though- he didn't seem as mushy as the others, and I found it very sweet that he would wait for Mal when she got detention in the 'Mal Hates Boys/Gym' book. I like Pete, but agree that we should have got a bit more on him, besides his bra-snapping phase, heh. Phew! Thanks for this thread, aln- I needed to vent.

^ Lol, love your little thing under your name, inconstantheart. And I agree about the boys - all the boy stuff really bored me as a kid, and even now, I guess I kind of like other things better than reading about boys in a BSC book, because theres's so many other books out there with boys and relationships and dating, that when I read my BSC books, I liked it to be different, I guess. I was never a fan of reading romantic books (though a little bit is nice. And I do like the mushiness of Logan and the rest, even if I know its not how normal boys that age should act.)

Yeah, Logan gave me unrealistic expectations of what boys would be like in 8th grade. The entire series gave me unrealistic expectations to my love life in 8th grade, lol. And then I didn't get my first kiss until I was 17. I liked Ben, though there's such inconsistency in ages. In one of the books I just reread, Dawn said that Ben was in her class. The poor boy ranges in ages 10-13. I agree with inconstantheart, he never seemed as mushy as Logan or Quint. His and Mal's relationship seemed pretty realistic for the age. They liked each other, he was caught giving her a few cheek kisses, but for the most part they were friends. I love Cary. I like Pete. Josh was cute. What about that other boy Claudia dated in 7th grade? I can't remember his name. I lump Trevor and Austin together as kind of being the same person for some reason. Rick Chow. Did anyone ever go to a dance with him? I wish Curtis Shaller, the 7th grade boy Jessi went to a few dances with had gotten more stuff. What about Robert? What does everyone think of him? Early Robert is okay by me. I just reread Stacey and the Cheerleaders and he's really sweet in that. I liked that he never really had to do with Stacey's being in the club. I thought it was good that they still dated even when she came back. He was above all "bad girls". Until he started dating one, but whatever.

I was indifferent to Robert. I felt he had a bit more of a story then some of the other boys though with his whole issue with depression. I used to dislike him when I was younger for cheating on Stacey and that still makes me mad, but not so much anymore. I just don't like or dislike him if that makes sense.

Thanks, nothingtolose18! The BSC books are amazing when it comes to finding hilarious lines. I think Claudia dated Mark something in 7th grade. I don't really remember those books. And Rick... Hmm. I think Stacey might have gone with him once? I tend to think of Rick, Trevor and Austin as one person. They seem to have the same kind of personalities, and they're such minor characters anyway that my brain doesn't bother with separate people. Oh, except Trevor's the poet! I never knew Robert cheated on Stacey until recently! I do like Robert in the early books, though, because he was a bit more realistic than some of the other guys. And I agree with you, lionessblack, about Stacey and Robert still dating when she returned to the BSC. I was glad he didn't care about that. I wonder if we were meant to like the BSC boyfriends. Their behaviour was so odd in some books, especially in SS #4, the 'Island Adventure' one, with Logan and Bart acting so stupid about standing someone up/cancelling a baseball game.

Out of the BSC boyfriends, I like Ben the best. Like lionessblack said, he isn't over the top mushy like Logan and Quint - no chin-tipping The activities they do seem realistic and fun, like going caroling and having hot chocolate afterwards in one of the Super Specials. Josh Rocker is one of my favorite later characters, since he can be playful and goofy but also serious and feeling. I love in Claudia and the Little Liar how they do things like sail boats in the pond. I like them better as friends than a couple, though.

None of the guys I went to middle school with ever acted like the BSC guys. Like someone said earlier, "dating" at that age meant that you talked on the phone, sat together at lunch, and/or occasionally went to a movie. None of the guys were like, "Oh, I love you!" Truth be told, I probably would've found that a little weird when I was 13. Of course, now that I'm 26 and want them to say it...well, different story. :-)

It won't let me edit my message for some reason. I forgot to add my $0.02 about Cary:
As for Cary, I like him because he's an interesting character (especially the glimpses you get of him as a normal person instead of the evil mastermind), but I always think of the boys I went to middle school with and can't imagine them doing anything as organized as the "Mischief Knights."
