I'm pretty sure Ms. Colman knew it was Karen who was cheating. Ricky's scores fairly high to begin with (in the 80's) and Karen started off at a 68. I'm fairly sure she was just waiting for her to fess up. I doubt she would have given Karen the gift certificate to Rosebud, though.

I could sympathize with Karen in the book because I had difficulty with math in school. I think that Ms. Colman knew that Karen cheated because she and Ricky got the same answers to all of the questions.

Ugh, I just hated timed tests. I always knew the arithmetic, but I have a minor hand-eye coordination deficit and I literally could not write quickly enough. And in most of my classes, you had to "pass" a level and sometimes the tests would be color-coded--it was humiliating for me, as a good student, to be stuck on the three times table test and have everyone know it.
I can sympathize a little bit because once you're coded as a "good student" or "gifted" it can be very embarrassing to come across something you don't understand as quickly--that's why a lot of people identified as gifted develop issues with perfectionism, sometimes to the point of not working at all if they aren't confident in their ability to do it perfectly. But I didn't feel the writing touched on that as much as I would have wanted.

I wonder why Ann acted like math was the only subject you could cheat in. (Karen, Claudia and Abby) Was plagiarism too sensitive of a topic for Ann? Mallory should have made extra cash by writing reports for people.

I re read this book recently and I can sympathize with Karen as far as the math issues go. I was always a pretty good student but I always had trouble in math. I remember in second grade was when I really started to get annoyed with math and it hasn't gotten too much better since! I know what I have to know for math class and that is about it!

This was a pretty good topic for young kids because almost everyone can relate to this topic. I think even I have a story similar to Karen's in math... maybe I was in Grade 4...
I wasn't really taught the "rules" as they mentioned in the book many times. I wish I was. It would have made everything faster.

ONE THING PARENTS SHOULD TRY TO HELP THEIR KIDS WITH IS LEARN STUDY HABITS (THAT WILL WORK FOR THEM). That will follow them to university.

Math does get tricky around the time of adding and subtracting double digits, and then multiplying . Of course now they are easy, but after years of practice.

From one illustration, Karen's desk was very close to Ricky's--I would gather much more so than Shawna's was to Claudia's. It does seem very odd that Ricky never noticed Karen was copying simply because she did so many times. It might have added to the story if he had noticed and either kept her secret at first or tried talking to her about it but still let her copy at least one other time because of their "marriage." It was too convenient how every quiz Ms. Colman was otherwise distracted though that is better than Mr. Zorzi's complete oblivion while sitting right in front of the class. I agree with Sparklymouse that this plot seemed to come out of no where. As for DM's tattoo, I have shared that a tattoo fan I am not. However, I loved how DM confided in Karen and even called her at Lisa's. I enjoyed the closer relationship between the two of them.

I like how karen was loyal to david michael by not telling lisa about the tattoo, calling it "a big house problem" it was so random how she knew boundaries like that one minute, and not the next but it was sweet regardless
I still didn't see what the big deal was over a fake tattoo if Karen and Andrew could have tattoos from a cereal box.

So, I'm rereading this book again.
Yes, Karen, David Michael, got real tattoo. The tattoo parlor allowed a 7 year old get a real tattoo. When she didn't want someone poking needles in her arms. When David Michael mention, that his classmates got buzzsaw, tattoos, and pierced earrings. One word came my to mind. Wild 7 years old on the loose.
When, I was younger, I was good in basic math. After the car accident in 1993. Math came harder for me.
Not finish with this book. So come back later, tell you how I liked it.
ETA: Trying to find hat buzzsaw haircut looks like. Does look like Mr. T's haircut or Kenau Reeves haircut in the movie Speed? Google it. Their not showing much of what buzzsaw haircut looks like.

Trust me when I say I can relate because when I was in school I hated math..didn't ace it until college. While realistic, I can't help but consider it an inconsistency since Karen is supposed to to be good at math, it's just she hated subtracting 9s. Even so, I wish could say 80s and 90s were my lowest grades in school, period.
