I just reread this one actually, it used to be my favorite one. I felt really bad for Karen getting sick, it never happened to be on the bus though.

I felt really bad for Karen in this book. Those older kids were so mean to her!

I really thought I had already posted about this one but guess not. I did quickly read this earlier thinking it was a spring book. The story took place in September. A cute spring-y moment of sorts was Karen's cats and dogs umbrella. I loved how Karen told us she had named each of the 6 cats and 6 dogs pictured on it (Page 52). No, she never told us their names. Anyway, The circus cake Karen and Nannie baked sounded awesome and I really like Nannie overall so much better in the LS series. We get to read about her spending more time with the kids. I did think Watson should have stepped in much earlier. I felt just awful for Karen on the bus. Stoneybrook Academy is an elementary school, right? K-5. Karen at the beginning tells us there are 6th graders on the bus so it is possible they were going to be dropped off along the way maybe at Kelsey Middle School--that would have been interesting to read. IIRC in the KIMCC book about the read-a-thon, Twin Trouble, it also seemed like there were kids older than 5th grade same with possibly one other book. I did also like Lisa was at Karen's school fair and how Karen enjoyed for that time pretending her family was one not two. Always like that part on Karen's Field Day as well. Not one of my favorite LS stories but it did have some (literally sweet moments.

I think SA is K-6 because she mentions some sixth graders in other books I believe.
I've posted in this thread before but after rereading i never realized the bully's name was Hadley with a D in it, i always said Haley. I also never noticed Nancy saying that bobby protected her from the big kids. That sounded nice considering she never had many friends in her class from tKiMC. I also never remembered Karen saying that if she lived a block closer to the school they wouldn't be riding the bus.

This book was sad. I didn't quite get where the busses came from. I wonder if they were privately funded since other schools already had a bus system. I had (mostly) really nice, attentive bus drivers throughout school. Mr. Wilson needed to get his head out of his butt and look into his enormous rearview mirror every once in a while to see what the kids were doing.
This was pretty intense bullying! They put mushy, wet cereal on Karen's seat, stole her books and ripped her notebook, glued her and Hannie down to the point that it ripped part of her legging off to get up, made her cry multiple times, and gave her nightmares when sleeping. She was sneaking off and trying to run to school and back without getting caught or being late.
Hadley is a very modern name. It may have been out there in 1994, but it's pretty tame now. She looked like a demon with a mullet in her illustrations.
I've never heard of this weird cake walk. It's like a raffle with musical chairs and you win a cake.
Hannie was a very good, loyal friend in this. Even from the moment that Karen was puking, and Hannie was patting her on the back. I'll be your bestie, but I'm still going to recoil in horror if you're puking next to me.

Hemingway’s first wife went by Hadley. They were married during the 20s.
I loved cake walks! We did them for PTA fundraisers.

Felt bad for Karen here, can relate to the way she was bullied..think she should have told someone before talking to the bus driver about what had happened..I'm surprised she didn't at least tell Ms. Coleman, considering how many times she confides in her over problems..
