I thought they were going to walk side by side while holding the ends of the sheet out to look "ghostly," thus disguising themselves better, but the illustration shows Karen behind Pamela--yeah, I'm sure they fooled everyone with that! Really interesting to finally seem them working together and having some fun. I think it's hilarious that Karen knew what a gentleman's bet was. She was so sweet to Leah and I love the illustration of the two of them, Leah is adorable in her costume, but the best part is there is someone in a cat costume in the corner of the picture, totally cracked me up.

I liked this book! I thought Karen punching Pamela came a little out of left field. Also, I was surprised that Karen didn't get punished more for what she did.

From way back: Karen punching Pamela was pretty fun to read about. It was odd that they got the same punishment for it. How would you like that call from the principal? "Hello, Mrs. Harding? Just calling to tell you that your daughter Pamela wouldn't share a swing on the playground so she can't march in the Halloween parade." "Oh, glad you called, I understand that someone punched my kid in the face and I was hoping the school was handling this matter seriously." "We are! The girl won't be able to march in the Halloween parade." "So you're telling me that my kid gets the same punishment for not giving someone else a turn on a swing that she was playing on as she would for punching someone in the face?" "That's right, glad you understand! Don't forget our school fundraiser just around the corner!" *click* I thought the identical punishments were some bullshit. Also, Pamela's unwillingness to rat on Karen seemed kind of weird, more suited to a state prison than a private elementary school classroom.

I know I read this book because I remember Karen being in the parade, but I totally don't remember her slapping Pamela! I will definitely have to find this one. My LS collection needs some help. I wasn't planning on collecting them - sometimes they're in the lots I get off ebay - but I might try to get them all.

Karen basically did not deserve to go to the parade. What happens is Pamela refuses to give up her swing (she is a swing hog at recess). Someone else wanted to use the swing (I think it was Nancy). When Pamela refuses, Karen stands in front of her and grabs her legs to stop her from swinging. Pamela still refuses to give up the swing. Karen punches her.
It happens really quickly. But yeah, they treat physical harm (punching) the same as being a hog (not sharing).

I thought that playground scene was so realistic with Pamela taunting/singing "you'll have to waiiit!" to Nancy and Hannie after they asked if they could swing. That is just how little girls act when they want to let you know who's in charge. I'm sure Ann liked writing about her alter ego slugging the mean girl ;D

booboobrewer, you think that Karen is Ann's alter-ego? Explain. Just curious

Oh, I said that because that's how Ann actually felt about Karen.
From her bio: "Karen is my alter ego. She's who I wish I could be. She is a true character."

I can't believe that Karen's punishment of not marching was sorta overturned so she could help Leah and no alternative consequence for socking Pamela happened. Sure Karen had to go without a costume but she was marching in the parade and no exception was made for Pamela to march.

GIRL FIGHT! If you haven't read this one already, you have to for the physical fight between Karen and Pamela (as discussed above). Does anyone else think it's unlikely that they didn't get caught? Hannie was RIGHT in front of them in the parade. Wouldn't you notice a 2-headed ghost with 4 feet shuffling around? Even if you couldn't see the feet, most kids would probably know what other ones were for Hallowe'en and then noticed this random ghost, which wasn't in the classrooms before, show up Edited to add: Hannie was behind them, not in front.

I'd prefer to be Karen because then my Daddy would be a real-live millionaire and I would get to have two of everything and go on oodles and oodles of vacations and have my own pony and be the Pizza Queen and get a rockin' mullet haircut, live beside a witch, basically have a brand new, exciting adventure every month and basically have the most dibbly fun life ever.

Life isn't all dibbly fun for Karen, Watson didn't buy her anything instantly and I used to think he was so unfair....but looking back now, she was a big spoiled brat that got away with too much unlike me. I couldn't understand why he wouldn't buy the doll sisters and have the girls pay him back, or at least nancy and hannie after, or why he wouldn't let the kids buy refreshments at the circus in karen's birthday, kids do get hungry!
and you forgot the alligator and moat LOL

In Watsons world, doll + bike > pony.
