Just read this in honor of Thanksgiving. Does anyone in Stoneybrook ever actually make it to the Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC? This time the Little House family cancels their vacation at the last minute.
I didn't like this one very much. I didn't like reading about sick, tired Grandad knowing he was going to die in another book. I wonder how Lisa helped Seth out at work. His office worker was already there to do the paperwork. Stoneybrook has a crappy grocery store if it literally ran out of food. I wouldn't mind a chicken wing Thanksgiving though!

I don't know if anyone in Stoneybrook ever made it to the Macy's parade. I thought Karen and Andrew went to the parade one Thanksgiving with the Big House family (because I remember another book where they were talking about "eating at a restaurant, staying at a hotel along the parade route and seeing it through their windows") but maybe I'm thinking of Get Well Soon Mallory because the Pikes were supposed to go to NYC to see the parade before Mal got sick. Idk, I just know the Macy's parade was brought up in nearly every Thanksgiving-related BSC or LS book ;D. I actually liked this book, even though I read this after Karen's Grandad and knew that he was going to die anyway . The parade Karen and her friends put together looked like fun and I wouldn't mind having a chicken wing Thanksgiving either (as long as the chicken had buffalo sauce on it, not barbecue) .

I wouldn't mind having a chicken wing on Thanksgiving either, I actually like them better. I still am trying to figure out though how they made the chicken wings to look like a turkey so they could stuff the stuffing in it. I just can't visualize it in my head. I did like this book overall, even though Grandad was very sick, and I knew he was going to die.

It was a little depressing reading this book because grandad dies in a few books. Still, I liked reading this book. I wouldn't mind having the Thanksgiving dinner they had.

It was, wasn't it? I'm just now realizing that. It's actually kind of annoying. Like, we get it already Ann, Macy's Parade, iconic NYC event, blah blah blah. Well, I've never read this book, but plan to, but I just wanted to respond to that ;D Obviously, I have no problems with spoilers ;D

It really worked out for me because I read Karen's Movie (for the first time) followed by this book (for the first time) and NOW I am onto Karen's Grandad...
So I get to see Grandad's entire progression one after the other.
I noticed that a lot of people were saying they enjoyed this book the most (out of the Thanksgiving books) and I can see why.
And also, look at Karen's gourd on the cover -- it looks WAY more advanced than someone in Grade 2!

I just finished reading this book in memory and honor of my Grandma and Champ, who I always think extra about in early October since that is when they both became angels up in heaven. I wanted to read a Thanksgiving story that was upbeat (aside from Granddad). This story is special to me because it reminds me of my very favorite LS story, Karen's Wish. I love that Nancy and her family spend Thanksgiving with Karen's family. I thought Granddad's toast on pages 95 and 97 (there is an illustration on page 96) was so sweet. This is what he said: MsStock, I also wonder how they arranged the chicken wings to look like a turkey. I don't eat meat and maybe that makes it harder for me to picture. I did like the idea though. That also reminded me of the Pikes and why I love their (general, not food flinging, sometimes wasting, or food showing off in mouth) attitude. I think Dee and John knew it was more important to be together as a family and focus on that then what each person was always eating. I have said before how much I wish that had been my experience, especially at holidays growing up. Love is what matters and this book, Turkey Day, does a good job of showing that especially when Granny and Grandad visit Stoneybrook Academy.

Karen was a turkey, they should have eaten her out of the series!
Bad joke...
I agree Karen's Wish is the best book in the series, if not in my top 3. How were the Engles-Dawes Thanksgivings? What did they eat?

This book mentions that last time Granny and Grandad stayed, they stayed in the upstairs guest room. Was this ever mentioned in another book? Because that means that the house had four bedrooms, in addition to the den downstairs, and that's really not what I'd picture when I think of a "Little House", although I guess Karen was comparing it against Watson's mansion which had nine+ bedrooms on the second floor alone. And then Seth says that Grandad can't climb the stairs to the guest room, but instead of rearranging the furniture they do have and moving the guest bed downstairs and the sofa upstairs while Granny and Grandad visit, they go out and buy a secondhand sofa bed for Granny and Grandad to sleep on, and give their couch to the Salvation Army. I've slept on sofa beds before and unless the guest bed they have is utterly terrible, it would have to be more comfortable than sleeping long term on a sofa bed.
Also, if Lisa and Seth would have changed their travel plans when Granny and Grandad first said they couldn't travel to NYC, I bet Granny would have made an amazing meal for them. But since it was at the last minute they had to go with what was available at the store. Even though they liked the chicken wings that they ended up with, I think Granny would have enjoyed having more time to prep and cook.
