I liked this more when I was a kid, I think mostly because I liked the basic plot-I loved the video game systems Nintendo 64 and PlayStation but didn't have them (just rented them for a time in the summer) and wanted them. Still some amusing moments but Karen is a little ridiculous in initially making gifts in the early morning.
Yeah, in that picture near the end Sam looked really young, I think a lot more like Karen's or David Michael's age.

Moonbeam very much sounds like a jokey/cutesy rename of Dreamcast and yet this book actually slightly preceded even the name being announced.

I don't blame Kristy for being mad. Karen completely flaked out on her. Newspaper delivery is actually a hard job to do without a car. I wouldn't recommend it as a young person job. I had the Paperboy game on Game Boy and thought it was really lame. Save your money, Karen. Give Karen some slack. She's only 7. Way too young to have a paper route to begin with. Those neighbours were anal about how they wanted their papers delivered. One woman actually blamed them when her dog ate her newspaper. How were they to know she had a dog??

All of the Karen apologists in this thread are bumming me out. Every other book where Karen does something annoying for half a chapter: “KAREN IS SUCH A BRAT.” This book where she’s a total flake the whole time: “SHE’S ONLY 7!!!” Lol, stop it. She sounded like a nightmare future co-worker someday.
Of course Karen was too young for the responsibility! That’s why the ad said 13 and above. You can’t legally hire a 7-year-old. I was actually confused that they just called the people up and said that they gave the job to Sam. That’s not how being hired works, either.
I was thinking that Mrs. Casper was going to be a ghost. 😀 That name, they never saw her, all mysterious. I hope her gifts were from the dollar store. They got weirder as time went on. They started out getting granola bars and barrettes and ended up getting fridge magnets shaped like newspapers and tiny address books.
I’m glad that Karen talking in abbreviations lasted one sentence. “I have an excellent oppty for you.”
The Moonbeam advertising was very persuasive. “Don’t be left in the stardust. Buy Moonbeam. Landing in stores soon!” I’m sincerely impressed that David Michael had enough money saved up to cover half of an entire console. This wasn’t just one little game. Every other book these kids had like $2 to their names.
I miss playing video games. Between this book and a video that I saw yesterday of some kid beating Tetris, I really want to play something!
