Didn't much care for the Field Day thing but I liked the sort-of subplot involving Karen doing her ancestors project and making things up to make her family sound good ;D.

Yeah, I didn't care for the field day either.

I thought that the field day was okay. I was uncomfortable when it was found out that Karen made up stuff about her family.

The Field Day plot -- it kind of felt like they were running out of book ideas at this point...

The Field Day was boring which was too bad because I liked that both Lisa and Watson attended. I know there will never be a true end of year for Karen in 2nd grade but maybe if this had been more of an end of school event it might have been better. I just had the thought that it could have been part of Heritage Day! That would have been very cool. I always did wish each regular charge had gotten even a mini portrait book and this could have been a great way of starting that. My favorite part of the book was when Karen had dinner with her mom during a Big house evening. It was something different from the typical LS book.
I forgot to say I thought Karen would have been over the moon about Watson's Great Aunt Josephine because she was so fancy (lavish parties) for her time.

This book came up today when I was talking to my sister (yes, we have fascinating conversations) and she pointed out that you'd think Karen would be at a definite disadvantage on Field Day, because she skipped a grade and is over a year younger than some of her classmates. But aside from that one book where Karen had an early bedtime, her young age never seemed to be a factor.

She was never portrayed as smaller or shorter than the other kids. (Not like Kristy or Mary Anne, anyway.) I don't think being younger was going to affect her physically compared to her classmates. Mentally she was going to get pissy as soon as everyone turned 13 or got their licenses. Haha, I just pictured another feud among the Musketeers and Karen having to ride the bus home while Hannie and Nancy drove.

I haven't read this book. But reading from people's post. Looks like, it's a boring book. I'll rent the book at the library someday.

The lead up to Field Day in this book is boring (reading about people doing aerobics is unsurprisingly kind of dull) but it does have one of my favorite Pamela things in it.
I really do like Pamela sometimes. I might even have to change my sig quote.
As for the ancestor report, I'm really surprised that Karen didn't see the appeal in the ancestor who was famous for throwing parties. I also liked the casual way Ms. Colman called her out on ripping off a movie plot for her ancestor report.

I reread this book last night and was surprised by the question sheet Ms. Colman gave out for the ancestor project on page 13. I have said this before but sometimes the projects the KIMCC are assigned come across to me as for older kids. I wish we had gotten to hear some of the other kids reports and that had been the subplot rather than field day, maybe some kids from Mr. Berger's room could have shared too. I remember in one LS book, pictures of family members were put up from both classes and the kids could guess who was how, a similar idea would have been so cool here, especially had any of the people written about been able to come. That reminds me, I had the thought this time around of being surprised Karen just didn't write about nannie! A bowling, pink-clinker, pants-wearing Grandma I still think Karen should have loved Great Aunt Josephine and her parties and asked Watson about his own parents though maybe Ms. Colman further defined ancestor as someone older? I know she did say the person could be living. Field Day really didn't do anything for me and I thought reading so much about the 3M's and their 3P's (practice, preparation, and performance) got boring. We don't even ever learn sport Sam plays do we? Karen says he and Charlie play sports at the HS. We know Charlie plays baseball and football so maybe Sam does also. Oh well, I haven't read about the BSc charges color war (Claudia Makes Up Her Mind) in a very long time that is sort of similar to a field day maybe I will give that a try or the Mini Olympics subplot of Jessi's Gold Medal.

I would have hated this class assignment. My ancestors would have all been like Lisa's. Livia the fisherwoman who caught 14 largemouth bass in an afternoon, Patsy with the big feet, Granny Nolan could drink and whistle at the same time (with or without dentures), Harriet was an illegal bookie (that one was super cool, Karen!!), or British Edna who went down with the Beulah May (not the Titanic) on her way to America. Lol that Watson's relatives were just rich people riching for decades.
Hannie's great-aunt Sofia Papadakis was the first female brain surgeon in America. Nancy's (presumably) Jewish great-grandmother spied for the French freedom fighters in WWII. She was captured by the Germans, sent to prison, then escaped and won a medal from the mayor of Paris after the war. Uh. I feel like Nancy was not told all the deets to that story. Was this lady in a concentration camp?
Kristy sobbing over a movie was less believable to me than Karen's whole essay.
I liked the 3 Musketeers attempt at aerobicizing. They were tired after 5 minutes, and the perky Earn the Burn girl was like "great warmup!" I tried a Billy Blanks tape once and wanted to die. I was super impressed that Karen could do seven pullups! I literally can't do one.

Wow, I havenโt read this one and now want to read about the ancestor project. Never would guess that was in a book titled Field Day!

I remember Karen doing other ancestor projects. Kristy's wedding gift to Watson and Elizabeth was a family tree with Karen on it, and I could've sworn Karen did another one in a regular series book.
