Loved Augustana, such a beautiful name for a holiday . This was one of those things that sounded like fun in theory but would be hard to execute in reality.

I have only read the synopsis for this book, but from the summary, this book seems like a good read.

Karen always came up with good ideas. Especially around the holidays! Augusta would seem like a good holiday.

I find it a bit of a stretch that so many adults went along with it so wholeheartedly!

I really want to like this book but so much of it is devoted to the kids doing research at the library and forming committees and subcommittees that it is just deadly dull. Karen was pretty bossy about what should happen and pretty annoying when she kept reminding the other kids that the holiday was her idea in the first place, which also made the book drag a bit. The holiday itself sounds fun enough. I like how they were able to talk their parents into buying them Augustania presents and all the watermelon talk has me really craving watermelon.
I so would have been the kid trying to form my friends into committees and force them to research August happenings but my friends would never have gone along with it.

Creating a new holiday sounds like fun but difficult since it seems like there's already a holiday for every thing. Karen was obnoxious when she wouldn't compromise about how Augustania could be celebrated. However, I did like it when Karen and her friends went to the library and read the different holidays and festivals.

I think this would have made for an awesome LS Super Special. A great way for us to get to know each of the Big House Neighborhood kids, and some of the BSC clients a little better. I did agree with Karen that it could be confusing if a group created holiday had multiple parts to it. But then that was what was cool, it was like a carnival/block party only smaller. Everyone got to contribute and choose how they most wanted to celebrate summer in August. I also liked the flowers on Karen's overall shorts. They reminded me of the pretty dyed daisies I got last summer. Finally, since August gave us the BSC (KGI) it should most definitely be celebrated in Stoneybrook!

There are random "holidays" devoted to almost anything you can imagine...

She should have paid homage to "kittykat club" and created a holiday for cat owners/lovers (to be inclusive) cause of nancy and melody having kittens too

Lol. Odd, I don't picture Karen as a cat lover even with so many stories involving them. So, did anyone celebrate Augustania this year?

I don't remember the date but I think it was more in the middle of the month.

I want to say she seems more of the playful type that would enjoy dogs, but she strikes me as someone who prefers small animals like emily jr. , crystal light and magic tastee

I think in another thread someone had asked when Augustania was. I had thought it was at the beginning of the month. I just re-read and it's on the last Saturday of the month instead. Karen told us the Saturday before that there was only one week left in August. I don't know if she meant exactly a week or just one full week but that's when it was. I still love Nancy's ad for Augustania with the three ice cream cones and thought Maria's dog parade idea sounded like a lot if fun and definitely like a BSC event. I would have enjoyed reading more about that. I just checked my calendar and next year the last Saturday of August is the 30th which just might be when the "real" Augustania was, maybe we can plan some sort of board "event" or at least have an Augustania card or e-card exchange.
