I love how the artists - and even the various writers of the series - have transformed Mary Anne from a prissy girl to almost a sex-kitten-type-model. Look at her on the cover of The Fire at Mary Anne's House... all sultry and innocent. "My house is burning down, but at least my haircut has grown out into a sexy bob". It's obvious that Stacey, Claudia, and Mary Anne where physically the most attractive. Stacey and Claudia in both a more 'sophisticated', made-up, glamourous way. Mary Anne in a more natural, subtle way. They made Mary Anne look really sexy in The silent witness and in The fire in MA house. Oh, and U4me? I loved TV kristy but hated TV MA.

I YouTubed it. And now I remember that I didn't like TV Dawn either. Her voice/accent (something about they way she talks - I can't really pinpoint it) drives me crazy.

I think I just keep thinking of her from The BSC Movie. I didn't think she was cute in that at all. The actress was emotionless. TV Mary Anne was actually friendly and cheerful like I imagine Mary Anne to be (most of the time ) And she resembled Mary Anne even if she was a bit tall. All the TV actresses did for their characters, which is why I liked it so much.

I must hand it to TV Mary Anne, she acted like I thought the book Mary Anne would act. I just hated that she was tall! I'm a stickler for detail, so yeah. It just ruined the image of her for me.

I think Mary Anne is very pretty in the innocent, unaware of it pretty. She is naturally beautiful. It's interesting how she developed from the cover of Saves the Day the Fire. I am not fond of her haircut nor her braids. I liked it when she wore her hair long and loose and wavyish. Such as in Logan Likes Mary Anne!, Bad Luck Mystery, 2 Many Babies, etc.

I generally thought that Mary Anne looked pretty on her covers. I would've liked it if Dawn's hair was as long on the covers as it was described in the books. Not only long but 'almost white' as it was often described in the books. I pictured Dawn being towheaded with straight butt-length hair, and Stacey a honey-blonde with shoulder-length curls. If they'd illustrated them that way, it would've been easier to tell them apart.

^ I completely agree. Sometimes I feel weird thinking about those things, but I would also describe Stacey (and Claudia) as hot. MA is only pretty (or cute). I would say Kristy is cute. What was Shannon? From my memory, I always thought she was considered gorgeous, but I've read descriptions that say she's "interesting" looking. I HATE Jessi in the movie. She was supposed to be long and lean, and she was none of that in the movie. That was terrible casting. The actress, Zelda Harris (b. February 17, 1985) was only 9 when it was filmed and 10 when it was released, though she looked at least two years younger. But Harris had just headlined Spike Lee's Crooklyn, so she was one of the few 'big names' in the film. The other was Larisa Oleynik, who was the title character in Nickelodeon's The Secret World of Alex Mack.

Mary Anne in the movie looks closer to her actual appearance with the height and hair and eyes and all. However, there's no personality in her. MA in the TV show looks nothing like her in the books. She's tall, her hair is a lighter brown and longer, and her eyes are blue. But her personality is quite accurate. She's sensitive, cheerful, passionate, and overdramatic ( ).

In the early books her hair was described as "mousy brown" so I kind of pictured that as being a light brown. At the beginning of the series, anyway. It looks pretty light on the cover of Kristy's Great Idea.

I love tv Mary-Anne because she actually looked the part. Movie MA was cute and fit but had the personality of a book.

It looks pretty light on the cover of Kristy's Great Idea. Huh. I never caught that. Now that I think of it (and looking through the covers), I can see that her hair is quite light, similar to mine, maybe a shade or two darker. However, by the mid-series and late-series, her hair gets darker, and is described as chestnut brown hair and in a few books as dark brown hair. Maybe she secretly dyed her hair a few shades darker?

Actually, I always saw Mary Anne as dark-haired, not light-haired.
And within the first few books, Mary Anne's hair and eyes are quite dark...the color of root beer or dark chocolate.
And the books come to describe Mary Anne as dark-haired...and no, I highly doubt that she'd be dying her hair in middle school.
And ALL the books describe Mary Anne as brown-eyed, not blue-eyed.
Mousy is actually a vague description of coloring because mice can be black, dark brown, light brown or yellow.
I think when Mary Anne is described as "mousy," the description is primarily capturing her quiet, timid personality, not her hair color.
This might sound funny, but I often think of Lady Diana as rather mousy.
Diana was soft-spoken and timid like Mary Anne and had a soft, timid voice and her blond hair was a soft muted gold, not a bright, brassy blond.
So...I think the 1995 film captured Mary Anne far better than the 1990s telly series did.
Meghan Lahey just did not cut it as a convincing Mary Anne...Mary Anne NEVER had blue eyes or light hair in book canon, not to mention being way too tall and Anglo-looking.
Rachel Leigh Cook was a much better, more convincing Mary Anne.
And in The Fire at Mary Anne's House, she isn't thinking about her cute bob...she's a mute mess there including her dark hair and her big brown eyes are wide with horror.
I'm so glad the new Netflix BSC series did not blunder into that canon error again and had the actress with dark hair and eyes.
I actually imagine Stacey with straight honey-colored hair while yes, Dawn is the one with pale straight blond hair.

Actually thinking about it I prefer the 2020 Mary Anne. She has the awkward personality down pat and the same general look. I’ve always pictured Mary Anne with light brown hair like I did, but Malia Baker sold me as Mary Anne.

I think when Mary Anne is described as "mousy," the description is primarily capturing her quiet, timid personality, not her hair color. I specifically recall her describing her own hair as “‘mouse-brown” in Logan likes Mary Anne.
