Doesn't Mal tell someone something is "fresh?" (Probably meaning chilly)?

Dawn... well I don't hate her. I really like her books and all but I hate that she is so pushy. Her constant preaching on matters were annoying. However, I don't think the BSC is complete without her. I hated when it was time for her to move but I loved the peace of not having to read about her pushiness. Her Californian vibe is refreshing I must say.

Dawn, Dawn Dawn... what is there to say about Dawn? Does anyone else agree that, if Dawn's wasn't your all-time favourite sitter, that you kind of forgot about her? She was always a bit in the background to me. Granted, I like her, but I always liked other sitters better.
And it's been mentioned, but I also cringed at the fact that her hair was always shoulder-length! And didn't you notice how, in the later books, Stacey's hair is cut shorter. I always thought it was so that you didn't confuse the two blondes.

Oh how I wish that I could forget her.... But she was always there to annoy me. I think out of all the sitters, she was the most insecure and had to find something to make her stand out, like being a crazy eco woman. I am all for saving the planet, but you have to let people live their lives and now bow to your will.
I really want to like her b/c I did at the beginning of the series when she first showed up, but I feel like her personality went away once she became MA's step sister. Then it was all about her relationship with MA and not a whole lot else. I would have loved to have more ghost hunting and seeing her grow up to make mature choices and not just hopping a plane when things got rough.

^Welcome back, Wiggirl. You, all of you, know what I think of Dawn. I don't even consider to have been a "crazy eco woman." I think she wanted us to believe she was. She certainly gained power (or so she hoped) with her patronizing over food choices, etc. The problem is (other than her reign in Dawn Saves the Planet) that was all she did. She never once simply invited people in a non threatening way to try a food she made or even bring a dish to a party and see what happened. She never took the initiative to join (or create at SMS) any local environmental groups or clubs. The thing that saddened me most about Dawn was I don't think she was living much of her life or enjoying it. I don't see how she could with using most all her strength on the other. Not a ghost fan but would have LOVED more of a back-story about the Mullrays, a connection to Stacey's Sophie, etc. I also still think it would have been a lot more interesting had Sharon married Trip or someone not named Richard. Perhaps if she had both Dawn and MA might have been more likable. But then I also would "vote" for Dawn never coming at all to CT or if she did to do so at least a couple "years" into the series.

I liked her and the first half of her books in the series. I pretty much hated everyone in the second half of their books, so she's on equal ground there. To this day I want her fabulous hair attached to my head. (The described hair, not the unfortunate stuff on the covers.)

I know that this has probably been discussed already, but as the TV show slogan goes, "Friends together never to PAAAAAaaaaAAAaaart!" But they *did* part. I always wondered, in the back of my mind, if they were such amazing friends -- why did Dawn leave? Granted, she did have her own homesickness, friends/family, life back in California -- and people do move from place to place. But she did control the move. Also, as the series progressed, I felt the relationships of the girls became less tight and I missed that from the early series. Finally, Ann herself mentioned that she doesn't see Dawn leaving California again, which ruins a chance at the BSC all living in Stoneybrook together as adults (haha wishful thinking from a fan, I guess!)

Something I've wondered about for a long time that I would love to ask Ann if she were willing to do a big Q&A session is whether Dawn was intended to be included in the series from the start. There were originally just going to be 4 books, so was she introduced in book 4 only because they had decided to keep the series going? Or was she always intended to be introduced in book 4, even though we wouldn't have gotten to see her as a BSC member, or see anything pan out between Richard and Sharon?

^ That's a good question! I assume that she was introduced to keep the series going and give a fresh perspective. I know that she wanted Stacey to move away because "that usually happens in a group of friends" but what about Dawn's final move across country!? Was that because of the same reason?
And while we're on this, what about Mal and Jessi? I always assumed they were put in to add characters closer to the readers' ages. But 11 year old babysitting adults is just really unrealistic, even in the 80s and 90s. I know Ann herself was probably an 11 year old adult but she's definitely the exception to the norm, haha.

^I agree that Mal and Jessi were probably added to include characters closer in age to the readers. I think this happens a lot in various storytelling...they'll add a younger character to be an Audience Surrogate because they think the readers will identify with the younger character and think it's cool that the kid gets to hang out with the cool older kids. But I think this backfires more often than it works. I think kids usually prefer reading (and fantasizing about identifying with) the cool older kids rather than someone closer to their age. At least, that was very much my experience reading the BSC as a kid. I really disliked Mal and Jessi because I wanted to read about the 13-year-olds, not 11-year-olds.

I think Cali!Dawn was weirdly out of character in places. Well, not so much OOC as not really having any distinguishing traits aside from her friendship with Sunny, because she was in Palo City rather than the Brook. There's one bit in Sunny 1 about Dawn being afraid of moving into year 9 and being unable to sleep because of that. I boggled when I read that. Dawn would *not* be fazed by something as silly as that! This is in keeping with the way she acted in NYC, but I thought that was contrived and OOC as well.

To me Dawn seemed the most selfish member and the one most annoyed by minor things.
It's weird that she seemed to never like Richard but thought it would be great to (and took credit for, although that was probably meant to be inaccurate thinking) bringing him and Sharon back together again so she and Mary Anne would be stepsisters.

^Obviously she got to know Richard and formed an opinion on him after he and Sharon were reunited.
