I used to hate and be totally irritated by bratty Stacey (probably because I was one of the targets of girls like her). As I've gotten older, I've accepted "loving to hate" her Maybe this is because I can relate more to other aspects of her life, now, so like her better overall or maybe because I now think that she does recognize it when she is a snob and (usually) feels at least some remorse after the fact. As for Laine's influence, I don't necessarily think that direct contact with Laine makes Stacey more snobby but I see that she was "socialized" by Laine to think that that kind of attitude is what makes someone cool. When she wants to be "cool", she reverts to this type of behavior without even realizing what she is doing. Just my view of it.

She's very rude about making fun of Mary Anne, after asking her to substitute for her because of a stupid reason, and for leaving the BSC because she thinks they're immature, even though they're not.

Stacey could definitely be rude and snobby to her friends, but I do think that the BSC members, for the most part, were pretty immature. Of course, they were thirteen and eleven years old...

Agree about not liking that aspect of Stacey and really not liking her in that book or any where she thinks she's "cool." What made me mad with asking MA to sub was that Stacey let her think it was something to do with her diabetes. I hate it when people use their illnesses like that....

I don't think Stacey said or even implied that that was the case, though. I remember it as Mary Anne just jumping to the conclusion on her own, I guess because Stacey said it was something important. I need to reread that one...

^ Stacey just let her believe it, which is almost as bad since she did feel guilty about it so knew she was wrong. She should have told the truth about where she was really going (I have no sympathy for Stacey in that book ;D)

It's funny, I usually don't identify with characters like her but there's something endearing about Stacey to me. I can identify with the desire to be cool yet you're torn cause you don't want to abandon your old friends either, yet you feel like you fit in more with another group. Plus, I think it's cute how she keeps pointing out how sophisticated she is yet just about everything she does betrays that and shows that at heart she's still a moony-eyed 13 year old girl. I'm not saying she isn't bratty, but because she always wanted to be 'cool' more than she was cool, it makes her brattiness seem almost cute.

I think Stacey feels a real inner conflict - like she thinks she's supposed to be cool but really isn't like that. I don't think the bratty aspect we see of Stacey is really the true Stacey (but that's just my perception ;D) I think the loyal, good friend is how she really wants to be.

Oh definitely, it's the conflict that makes her a much more interesting character. Makes me wonder how much character depth was planned by the ghostwriters or if they weren't even aware they were making her a complex character;) Definitely the brattiness is more her being a 13 year old girl, an age in which "bratty" is too mild a word for how most of us acted back then!

I really liked her in the BSC #9 "The Ghost At Dawn's House",the part when they scared Mary Anne,Kristy and Claudia.

I never Felt she was All that Bratty, But Much more BRAGGY! Every Chapter Two she is saying how she is a fashion plate! And In Stacey's Big Crush she is especially Braggy! She keeps saying how gorgeous she is and how smart she is! After a while it was a more than A little Annoying

Aw Anna, your Hannie signature is so adorable heheh
Although she was mean in Stacey vs. the BSC, I could sympathize with her too, cause it could be hard when you're in that age group and outgrowing your friends for a bit. I went through something similar with my best friend at 13.

I agree, I never thought Stacey was bratty, but she did like to brag. Laine was bratty, but Stacey was mostly quite down to earth, and I also agree that making new friends and growing up, and being conflicted about it is quite realistic!
