I think it's weird. Didn't Mallory choose her own glasses?

I'm not sure if she chose her own or not... but those glasses were horrible on her! I kind of wish that Mallory had wished for more fashionable glasses rather than contacts because I started to wear glasses when I was 10 and felt very self-conscious about them. Even to this day, I struggle with contacts (they irritate my eyes too much) so I still wear my glasses for TV, schoolwork, working on the computer, etc... I feel much less self-conscious now because I like the glasses that I wear and I read in this book on body language that many see people with glasses as sophisticated (hehe such a Stacey word!), intelligent, confident and sexy It's a shame that that was never really promoted in the BSC. I think it was touched upon in Mary Anne's Book but never in Mallory's case.

^ yeah you're right, my mum used to have these massive plastic glasses that were simply HIDEOUS. When I see photos of her in them, I always ask what on earth she was thinking, but apparently they were the style at the time and what everyone wore.
I would never consider contacts, my glasses are quite "discreet" and I have allergies, so the contacts would drive me insane.

Some people just don't look good in glasses, and I'm one of them (luckily I can wear contacts ;D) But I agree that glasses shouldn't have been portrayed so horribly in the books. That leads me to another thought about attitudes toward looks in the BSC in general... And yeah, my mom had the EXACT SAME KIND of hideous, humongous plastic glasses, macca- back in, say, 1991 when I was three. Even she admits now that they were hideous- so I guess it really was the style then

I think it was probably just the style at the time. I've had glasses for almost twenty years, and when I look at pictures of myself when I was younger, I looked HIDEOUS, mostly because of the style. I always picture Mallory with these big, pink, plastic frames that I used to have when I was probably in the fourth grade or so. I thought they were totally dibble when I picked them out, but they were really hideous. My sixth grade glasses were these enormous, enormous, very dark forest green color, and they took up easily half my face. Good grief, why did my mom let me buy those things?

It was totally the style back then. Karen was excited about her big plastic pink and blue glasses. If you look at lots of the LS covers and illustrations, her glasses took up half her face too. She should have given Mallory a pep talk about how gigundoly great glasses are.

I had those pink plastic frames in 3rd grade (circa 1989-90), and they weren't cute back then, either, especially if you're blond and pale pink washed you out.

^I had big pink plastic frames with hearts and itty-bitty rhinestones on the corners. I was so dibble, you guys!
(I got my first wire frames by the time I started middle school, though).

Knowing her "taste" she'd think she was making a dibbly sophisticated fashion statement.

^ I can definitely see Mal choosing something with sparkles if her parents would let her. ;D The girls seem to really like glitter/sparkles....

^ ;D I've never worn sparkles because the glittery stuff always tends to come off and stick to my skin and makes me itch. ;D I never gave Mal's glasses much thought, probably because I've been blessed with good eyesight (I took after my dad, thank goodness). I always pictured them as cute, though I'm sure they weren't based on her descriptions and the illustrations. I did always feel for her, though, with not being able to get contacts as I know how my mom felt about glasses vs. contacts. Even now, she prefers her contacts and can even see better out of them. I know some people have that while others are the opposite.
