^ Glad to hear you had a good experience with glasses. No matter what, though, I'm glad I never had to have them (at least haven't had to yet - my fingers are crossed) because I don't think I would have good experiences with them and don't think Mallory did, either. Maybe better frames would have helped but being a self conscious person to begin with I think might have created some of the problems for her with feeling uncomfortable wearing the glasses. Again, though, no first hand experience on this and I'm only going by what my mom and friends have said about their glasses and eyesight. I know kids were quite cruel to my mom in elementary school and called her "four eyes" and all kinds of other names so can imagine that Mal might have faced the same. Yeah, I agree. I think a kid's experience with glasses really depends on the individual. If you're a more confident, outgoing, popular type, you'll probably get the fascinated response, with everyone wanting to try them on. But if you're more a Mallory type - self-concious, dorky - I could imagine the kids would be quite mean. If Mallory was already feeling concerned about her appearance, the last thing she'd want is something to make her stand out even more. I can totally understand that. Because I didn't get glasses until last year, I never whined about it, just doesn't bother me either way. Good to be able to see, though! ;D

I got glasses when I was 8 and wasn't allowed to get contacts until I was something like 16 or 17 years old. I didn't last too long with them, though. Too much upkeep. I'm sure they have better materials and stuff now, but my eyes would get so irritated because I was very busy and would leave them in for like fourteen hours at a time. Oh, well. Now, I think I look much better with glasses.
I never understood the way people complain about glasses all the time. It's annoying when it's cold outside and they steam up when you walk into someplace warm, or when you're running or doing sports and they slide down your nose from the sweat, or when you want to wear funky sunglasses but can't because they're not prescription. (Or when you're making out, but somehow I don't think that Mal would have that problem, hee.) Glasses are just a fact of life for some people, no different or more obtrusive than wearing underwear. You get used to them pretty quickly. (Even when I wore contacts, I was constantly pushing the phantom frames up my nose, like an amputee who lost a limb.) It may be that I can't see more than two feet in front of me without them that I don't really have an issue with them. I don't know. I just never understood Mallory's constant complaining.

People ask me all the time. It's so weird.

My sentiments exactly. I never whined about my glasses--I just dealt with it. I don't think I ever thought that my life would be better if I had contacts. I was also about 17 when I got contacts, and I wore them for several years, but I also had a pair of glasses for backup. I think I look better in contacts, but now I don't want to deal with the maintenance. Not only am I really nearsighted, I have astigmatism, and the contacts I need are very expensive. Couple that with a decent pair of glasses for those times I'm not wearing contacts and it just isn't worth it. That and they bothered me when I was wearing them. And I decided I'm not getting a laser anywhere near my eyes. I also don't like it when in the movies they do a makeover and they give the dorky girl contacts and suddenly she looks great. Just give her a decent pair of glasses!! Gives me some understanding on why Mallory whined so much. There aren't that many women role models who wear glasses.

I'm like you ringdings. I have a severe astigmatism and my contacts are very expensive so I primarily wear glasses although for special occasions I'll switch to contacts. They are very cute and flattering glasses though so I never got why Mallory picked out the fugliest pair in the world to wear. My parents let me pick my own when I was that age and I sure wasn't going to pick the ugly ones.
I'd probably like contacts better if I didn't have an astigmatism. They told me at the eye doctor that contacts for that have a little weight inside that you sometimes have to blink to center. It drives me nuts when I put them in especially when driving. I have a vision restricted license so it is not safe for me to be on the road without being able to see well.

I have astigmatism, too! Hmm, maybe that's why contacts were so un-fun.

I know! I hate it when they do makeovers in films on people and take off the glasses. I think some people really suit glasses and they should get a nicer pair instead of the awful looking ones that the girl or guy (pre-makeover) would be wearing.
Although I'm positive that I do see a lot of celebrities wearing glasses.

i like how in sex and the city they had charlotte wear glasses when she was working and doing gallery stuff and contacts when she was out in the city. i think that was very representational of glasses-wearing life--i like to wear contacts when i go out and always wear contacts when i'm exercising, but i couldn't get through a workday wearing my contacts.

I have astigmatism, too!
Anyway, the worst part about wearing glasses was wearing them in the rain. I ran cross country/track in high school and we had to practice in the rain -- you can imagine what it's like when you're running in the woods and you can barely see out of your glasses. A lot of times, I would just take them off in those situations and hope that I would see obstacles in time. Other than that, I didn't mind glasses. The only times that people were ever mean to me about glasses was in college, when a few guys actually told me that I should get contacts because I'd look prettier without glasses. Looking back...I think that was a jerky thing to say. I mean, wow, who says that??

^^Jerky college guys. High school guys too.
I think the glasses most celebrities wear aren't real. I mean, they have fake glass in them and are purely for show. You can kinda tell because they're so much tinner than the real thing.

I have astigmatism as well... does seem to be a trend with us BSC fans! ;D
Totally agree about the makeovers in movies - just take the glasses off, let the hair down and suddenly the girl is hot stuff. In some cases, glasses are so much a part of the person, they seem downright strange without them.

Another one with astigmatism...it really makes wearing contacts difficult. I've been wearing my glasses a lot more lately. Funny that I can see better with them than with my contacts. I think I wore those out. ;D

I think Tina Fey looks great in glasses, and she's one of the few celebrities that wears glasses all the time -- Lisa Loeb, too.

I had contacts for a while, but I didn't like them very much. Something about touching my eyeball gave me the shivers.
As for the glasses, I've worn them since I was 9, so I'm used to them. I put them on every day, the same as I put on my watch. They're no huge inconvenience, unless I'm out in the sun (no sunglasses for me!), or it's humid, etc. I HAVE thought about the Lasik surgery (since my eyes are REALLY bad), but I don't know. I'm on the fence about it right now.
