I just touched on this in the Mary Anne + the Secret in the Attic post, but I figure it'll get more discussion over here.
What is up with Mary Anne always practically cheating on Logan? She goes on a date with some random farm boy in MA + the Attic, there's Alex in Sea City... and the funny thing is she KNOWS she shouldn't be doing it as she's writing letters to Dawn telling her not to tell Logan about her date with the farm boy! It seems very uncharacteristic!

well....I don't really think it's considered a "date". Now, the "date" with Bob, the guy from Iowa, that wasn't really even a date. He just bought her some food and talked about himself the whole time. As for Alex....well, I don't know about that. I think they should have told each other about their SO's before they did the whole outings together. I mean, it would have saved a lot of uncomfortable moments in the long run.

Good topic. I always thought this was weird! MA doesn't seem like the kind of girl to do this, I could imagine Stacey dating more boys at once, but sweet Mary Anne?

The thing with Bob wouldn't have seemed like such a big deal to me if Mary Anne hadn't written to Dawn and specifically told her not to tell Logan about it. But maybe Mary Anne was just feeling tied down. After all, she was 13 and by the time she went out with Bob in Mystery #5 she'd been with Logan for, what, 7 years or so?

I didn't really think too much of the Bob thing... It was more Alex from Sea City and the dates that they went on that raised alarm bells for me.

Yeah I was actually referring more to Alex than to Bob, too. I can imagine MA wanted someone her age to hang out with in Iowa, but the Alex thing was... a little weird

Maybe MA had a weakness for Alex, because he was the first guy she ever liked. I don't think they ever actually did anything, did they? Logan was pretty jealous of him in SS10 though. Forgetting about boyfriends seemed pretty common. The BSC breaks hearts all over the world.

^^he was jealous until he met him. Then he was like 'no big deal', which makes me wonder if Alex was, like, a wuss or something . I wonder what would have happened if the tables were turned and Logan went out w/ some old girlfriend whenever he went back home to Kentucky to visit. Or do you think he's too much of a goody goody to think of doing that?

^ I've always wondered about Logan's old girlfriends. Did it ever mention if he had any?

It seems very uncharacteristic! For such a "shy" girl, Mary Anne is certainly involved with enough boys. Other than the stage fright and some things like that, it seems that her shyness is one more thing that the books tell us instead of actually showing (like Richard being called "very strict" in every book).

For such a "shy" girl, Mary Anne is certainly involved with enough boys. ITA They did mention in every Chapter Two that MA is "the last one anyone would expect to have a steady boyfriend!" but it still doesn't make it any more realistic. At least it was acknowledged, though.

^ I think Ann likes to give things to characters whom you would least expect to have it. Stacey: being good at Math, Claudia: good at school, Jessi: good at ballet (the book always mentions how there is not that many black dancers), etc.

MA said she agreed to go on a date with him in a letter to Dawn and then ended it by saying Don't ever, EVER tell Logan about it. That's kinda insensitive, as MA can't stand being lied to herself. (Not that omitting the info about the date is technically lying, but keeping it from him just isn't her typical behavior.) That's funny thinking about if Logan had any ex-girlfriends himself, because for being such a supposed dreamboat he probably had a few in Kentucky
