Sorry, just to get back to Kristy and Bart... I always thought that Kristy + Bart = ? seemed a bit off. Out of order. Occurred too late. Should never have occurred at all? In the beginning, and for most of the series, Kristy and Bart *are* in that Mal/Ben stage, where they are definitely more than friends, but maybe not Logan/Mary Anne status. So we have an entire series where both Bart and Kristy are happy where they are, but after a gazillion softball games, movies, dances etc, Bart suddenly decides to start calling Kristy his girlfriend? It seemed so out of the blue. What he *did* didn't seem that different (apart from the kissing). I mean, in Mystery Admirer, he was sending her love letters! Declaring undying love! Kristy wasn't freaked out by that. And in Snowbound, where Bart says that she's beautiful, she *likes* it. She gets up at 5am to shave her legs for him! Kristy + Bart = ? just seemed like it was in the wrong time frame, somehow.

I agree, it does seem pretty "off". Previous posters comment on Kristy ever playing w/dolls, but remember, she became more of a one-sided sort of tomboy as the series went on. She was a bit less that way at the beginning. Actually a bit like myself: from the skirts & dresses I wear you'd never guess at my love of cars and ice hockey!

What I didn't understand is that she said that they had kissed before. So...what was the deal with them kissing then? I would rather kiss someone I considered my boyfriend than just a friend. Maybe that is just me. Kristy did say sometimes that she considered him her boyfriend but they just didn't call each other that, or something like that.

Was it just the peck or was it something more? Maybe not the actual making-out that shows up in this book.

I am not sure, but he kisses her in Kristy and the Missing Child and she comments that he kisses her at the movies or whatever. It may just be a peck though. Here is a quote directly from Kristy + Bart = ?
"I felt something warm on my left cheek. I jerked back. Bart was inches away, leaning over my seat. He laughed. I laughed. I settled into my seat. And then Bart kissed me. Full on the lips. Right there in the back of the dark movie theater. How did it feel? Well, it's not as if Bart and I had never kissed before. We had. We're not babies. Kissing is no big thing. I didn't yell or say "yuck" or try to spit out his germs. I returned the kiss, just a short one, and we turned back to watch the movie."
That was before the make-out scene. To me, it sounds like they have frenched kissed before the make-out scene. I dunno though.

I'm not sure, either. I agree that the timing of this book just seems wrong. It might have fit better if it was earlier in the series.

I really want to read that Book, I have always like Bart and Kristy. They are much more realistic for middle-school, however from reading your excepts the makeout seen is advanced stuff! Do you think Bart had ever kissed anyone before, cause from the sound of those excepts he knows what he is doing!

I kind of like the pairing, mainly because I can use it as an argument for everyone who calls Kristy a lesbian just because she's a tomboy and hates some boys. I haven't read many of the later books (because I can't find them anywhere), but she seemed to already have a major crush on Bart when she first met him in "Kristy and the Walking Disaster" and even describes him as a "very very cute guy" at first glance. Later on, when she's writing down things to think about for the Krushers, one of them is "Does Bart Taylor think I'm cute?" And while some people may have thought the notes in "Kristy's Mystery Admirer" were creepy, I think the ones he sent were sweet.
After all, it was Cokie who sent the creepy ones. I mean, "Violets are blue, blood is red, I'll remember you when you are dead"? Weird.
So yeah, Kristy/Bart is definitely a pairing I like. He seems like a nice enough kid.

I am a huge shipper of Kristy and Bart. Their relationship seems more normal for thirteen year olds. I loved, loved the make-out scene in Kristy + Bart = ? And I think they implied they'd French kissed before the make-out scene. Which is heavy stuff for kids their age, but not unrealistic. For example, MA and Logan aren't realistic at ALL. They're more like thirty year old married couples LOL. Did Kristy actually become Bart's official boyfriend by the end of the series?

No, they didn't become a couple. Hey, now I want to read that book with the necking scene!
I can see Kristy and Claudia being the first of the BSC to become sexually active late in high school or early university...the BSC's first explorers!

^Like Judy Blume! You can read Freckle Juice as a 6 year old, then graduate up to Forever as a young teen, and finally Wifey and Summer Sisters when you get a little older! heh. That would really weird me out, though, to read an "adult" book by AMM. AMM did write some books for older readers. I've read "Missing Since Monday" and "Slam Book". In the first, a little girl goes missing when her brother and sister are looking after her. In the end, it turns out their estranged mom took her (not the girl's mom, she's a half-sister). The second involves a freshman in high school getting popular by circulating a book where people write opinions about everyone else. It also involves racism, drugs and suicide, along with toxic friendships. One girl has no friends at one point, because rascism. Even those with her skin colour are racist and say she's an Oreo.

That would really weird me out, though, to read an "adult" book by AMM. I love Judy Blume also...Ann Martin's writing style is very similar to Judy's. AMM did write some books for older readers. I've read "Missing Since Monday" and "Slam Book". In the first, a little girl goes missing when her brother and sister are looking after her. I've read Missing Since Monday, but not Slam Book...now you have me interested in Slam Book. Freshman year of high school can be a tough year for many teens. I've written a few fanfictions about the BSC in high school. They deal with clique bullying, acne, sexual feelings, drinking, birth control, wild parties and all that good teen stuff. During their high school years, the BSC go to a few parties where some kids get drunk and some parties are rather wild. I started a fanfic where the BSC in their junior year help out a pregnant Kerry. I also have in their senior year where a same-age cousin of Kristy's has a baby and places the baby for adoption with a lady she knows. In junior year, a girl who's joined the BSC that year confides to Mary Anne that she's gay. No shock, no drama, just mundane since by high school, they would know about birth control, teen pregnancy and LBG teens. I have the BSC age properly and welcome them to adulthood.

I wish Kristy and Bart stayed together, they were really cute together. At least we know what kind of guy Kristy goes for: confident and funny athletic guys.
