Kristy and Watson’s relationship is one of my favorite things to watch evolve over the course of the books. It seems really realistic, too, because it’s gradual instead of everything just suddenly being okay. It’s interesting to watch her going from absolutely hating him in Great Idea to thinking he’s “okay” in Walking Disaster and bonding with him over the baseball to calling him “my dad” when she calls 911 in Mr. Mom and then to considering him her dad in Kristy’s Book when he gives her the baseball glove. I hate Patrick and don’t think he even deserves to be called a “father” so I’m glad to see Watson step up and fill this role and Kristy eventually allowing him to do it.

This relationship seemed a lot more realistic than the one between, say, Dawn and Richard ever did. Watson seemed like a nice guy, except for his icky biological children. I never finished Kristy at Bat, but I did like the idea of them bonding like that.

i also recall from kristy's big news that watson was going to partially finance charlie's college education, so he really stepped up.

Watson seemed like a nice guy, except for his icky biological children. Hahahahahaha! Anyway, I really liked Watson, and Watson and Kristy's relationship. I liked watching it evolve over the course of the series as well, starting with Kristy hating him to her being happy when he calls her his daughter. I always got a little teary-eyed over those moments, for some reason. They were just so sweet. Watson's awesome. He was so generous, especially to the BSC: taking them on cruises so they don't feel left out, sponsoring scholarships, pulling strings with the city so they could have various festivals and parties. Didn't he even rent a bunch of rides for a BSC carnival? Maybe that's part of the reason why Kristy and Watson bonded. Watson took a genuine interest in the club, which obviously means a lot to her, and it brought them together.

^ Agree about the club and Watson's genuine interest in Kristy's life helping their relationship. I think he was actually one of the best BSC parents with being involved in his daughter's life.

I think it's so sweet how concerned Kristy is about Watson in Super Mystery #2, wanting to carry his bags for him and everything.

I agree with what everyone has said so far. Her reaction to him in the beginning of the series is typically bratty, and the way she comes around is nice. I'm glad for both of them that Kristy let herself like Watson more!

I really enjoyed Kristy and Mr. Mom, and it was particularly - if not sweet, then SOMETHING - when she called 911 and shouted about her "dad" having a heart attack.

^ I think the way she said it without thinking shows how she really felt about him. That's what I liked about it - it seemed so natural.

^ Yes! It just sort of came out with the panic of the moment. I always liked that, too. Well, not the part about Watson having a heart attack, but the way it showed Kristy's real attitude towards him.

I LOVE Kristy and Watson's relationship. I love both of those characters. The way their relationship evolves is one of the best things about the BSC books imo because there is so LITTLE character growth throughout the series and if someone changes, we're basically just told that they did, not shown how they did, so I really love seeing how Kristy and Watson grow from her hating him and resenting him to accepting and actually thinking of him as her dad.

I agree with what everyone's saying. I found the nice moments in their relationship more touching than, say, Mary Anne and Sharon (who didn't always get along, but that lasted for, like, two books, until Dawn moved back to California), because of the realistic evolution of the relationship. Actual character development in the BSC series - it can be done!

Agree, mckay, about more evolution with Kristy and Watson. I think they could have done a lot more with MA and Sharon and did see some progress but not consistent change. Maybe that's the difference in MA's less consistent (for lack of a better word) personality. Also would have liked seeing more interaction between Dawn and Richard.

I really enjoyed watching Kristy and Watson's relationship grow. I think it was a good natural progression from resenting him to really caring about him like he was her real father. I think Watson made a huge effort to be a part of all his step kid's lives.
