I'm sure Mallory's age does have a lot to do with her insecurities. That and the fact that she is surrounded by teenagers who have long, flowy, cornsilk hair and perfectly clear complexions and "sophisticated" NYC clothes!

I really liked it how Mal got picked to be an extra in Kristy and the Vampires when she had her normal look and actually because she had the right look. Did this also happen at the end of CA Girls after she looked like herself again or am I thinking of Kristy and the Vampires again?

That was only in Vampires. At the end of CA Girls, though, a boy in the park checks her out and she's flattered he notices the "real" her.

I think Mal will blossom, but she may never be a knock out. I actually think Abby's hair was worse, very unruly. I have very crazy hair, but I also have a GHD, which gives me straighter hair than... well someone with straight hair. No one who I've met since I got my GHD believes me hair is naturally crly. There is no frizz, no curl. It's great! But curly hair can be nice tamed. It just takes time, time I don't have

Abby's hair probably is much harder to tame and control than Mallory's, but combined with Mallory's other, uhh... shortcomings, I think she still has the short end of the stick. Poor girl! Abby seems more of the "heck yeah, here's my hair!!!" type, too.

I haven't read the other pages on this thread, but in BSC in the USA, Mallory looks a lot prettier than Abby in the illustrations. Abby looks kind of sturdy in some drawings, while Mallory looks almost pretty, esp. in the Chincoteague chapter.

Hehehe was watching the movie, 'The Nutty Professor' the other day (the original 1963 version with Jerry Lewis in it) and was thinking how amusing that would be as a fanfic for Mallory. She moans so much about being ugly, underconfident, having braces, frizzy hair, glasses and having a Spaz Girl reputation that she takes a concoction that makes her cool, popular, confident and sexy... but a b*tch. Then the BSC eventually work out Mallory's Jekyll/Hyde situation and try to convince her that a dual personality is not the way to go and that they hate the New Gorgeous but Arrogant Mallory and want the Old Dorky but Nice Mallory back ;D

I actually found that in alot of the later cover illustrations, Mallory looks alot cuter. Not ZOMGMODEL! gorgeous, but just 11-year-old cute, like on Kristy's Worst Idea or Don't Give up Mallory. I think it's cause the later book covers have her looking like an actual 11 year old... the early ones (especially Hello Mallory) she looks nowhere near 11!
There's this one verse in At The Ballet from A Chorus Line that always makes me think of Mal; "Mother always said I'd be very attractive When I grew up, when I grew up! Different, she said, with a special something And a very very personal flair
And though I was 8 or 9, though I was 8 or 9, though I was 8 or 9... I hated her! Now, different is nice, but it sure isn't pretty, pretty is what its about! I never met anyone who was 'different' who couldn't figure that out!"

Yes,I think Mallory could be pretty(And I think she is already pretty),if they will just allow her to wear more trendy clothes,or even more simple clothes with cute designs. I hate her outfit on the book cover of the BSC #100 "Kristy's Worst Idea",but I like her outfit on the book cover of "Mallory and The Trouble with Twins"

I had a "friend" in high school with frizzy red hair, glasses and braces. She was in band. We hung out with her because she had a car. We tried to make her pretty - we convinced her to straighten her hair (she got it relaxed), and wear makeup. She actually ended up looking worse. Plus she tried to dress like me, and not everyone can pull that off. She got contacts too, and it didn't help.
But I don't think Mal has quite the shortcomings of this girl. She had these eyes that sort of stuck out and it was just a mess. Her personality bugged too, with the constant trying to be like us instead of trying to be like us but with her own flair. She just carbon copied. It was annoying.
HAHA... the ads are for Hair Care.
I guess I never really considered Mal that hideous. If the people who did the cover art were not insane about the giant grandma glasses, then mal might not be so bad. I mean, she seems to have good skin and I'm sure her hair is fine. Her glasses probably aren't that bad either. The braces will go away eventually, and she's not fat or anything.

I agree- actually, I think she looks particularly pretty on "Mallory's Christmas Wish."

^ I agree about Mal on that cover. It's one of my favorites. ;D Cpenny, your story sounds a little bit like Stacey's Secret Friend with the attempted makeover, though Tess didn't want to change and was happy with herself. Hope that girl found a way to be, too. I always wished Mal could have found a way to be happy with or at least more content with her looks as I never thought she was hideous or even ugly, either.
