^In hindsight, we were kind of mean to her, using her for her car and making fun of her behind her back... but she was so insecure and homely. I mean, she probably would have looked a lot better if she wasn't constantly trying to be something she wasn't. Which is something that Mal needed to learn -- glitter and trendy clothes aren't going to make you popular or pretty.
And one more thing about how horrible a person I was -- we didn't become friends with her for the sole intent of using her and making her over. I know, it doesn't really excuse my actions or behavior. But after a while she just got to be too much, you know?
Stacey's Secret Friend annoys me. Stacey sounds like such a brat in that one, trying to make over this girl who doesn't want to be made over. I might have had my selfish, horrible moments, but I have never done that. Stacey seemed really "small town" in that book.

^ Hope I didn't offend you as I wasn't trying to say you were a horrible person. ;D Just hearing anything about trying to "make someone over" immediately makes me think of Secret Friend. I'm always finding BSC/real life connections. ;D As for Secret Friend, I think Stacey had good intentions and didn't realize at first that Tess was happy with herself. Kind of clueless, I think, but not being mean intentionally. I do wish she would have just been Tess's friend, though, instead of trying to change her.

^I really didn't think you were. My horrible person comment was directed at myself, as it was kind of a mean thing to do, remaining friends with this girl out of convenience when no one really liked her, and being mean to her when she wasn't looking. It was so 'high school' though. And ... well, here it is 10 years later and I'm talking about her on a message board. (Also, she turned out to be evil, and that is not BSC board appropriate)
I still think Mal could have really benefited from some self esteem and confidence. It seems to me that a lot of fugly people are attractive when they think they are attractive and dress appropriately.

^ Agree about Mal needing self esteem and confidence in all areas. Hopefully she found it at Riverbend. That's another reason a spin off would have been interesting....

I get the impression that she did find it at riverbend, judging by her interaction with her friends.

I think Mallory was already pretty. She just did not know it. I think one of the babysitter's said that Mallory was going to be a knockout when she got her braces off and contacts. That means she must have been pretty underneath it all. Plus she had a sweet personality and I find that when people have sweet personalities it makes them appear prettier/handsomer on the outside too. I just love reddish brown hair and all of her and her siblings are said to have blue eyes, and blue eyes are very pretty. She was just in that awkward 11 year old phase.

I think Stacey was the one who said the thing about Mal being a knockout. Coming from her, that's a big compliment. ;D Though Stacey tends to be pretty nice if she isn't in "cool" mode.

I remember Stacey saying that Mallory would be a 'knock-out' some day, though I can't remember which book.
I don't think Mallory is ugly, just eleven! I like red hair and blue eyes are pretty - I think that would be a striking combination. There's never any mention of her having bad skin or anything like that.
The 'sturdiness' thing annoys me. I don't take 'sturdy' to be anything bad - just not stick thin, yet it seems to be used in a negative light. I was probably 'sturdy' when I was eleven - now I'm lucky enough to have an hourglass figure, though I do need to be careful with what I eat as I have a tendency to put weight on easily.
I bet she ends up being the striking one, in five years time.

^ I agree. Most people look slightly dorky at 11 because they're at that awkward stage between childhood and adolescence. I bet she'll be one of the prettiest by late high school.

And then at the middle school reunion when all the guys who tormented her start hitting on her she can just be like "Go to hell. All of you." And that will be awesome.
