I don't think that mallory has unrealistic expectations of herself. She wants to be an author and all, but I don't know that she expects she will be. If anything I would consider Mal to have fairly low self esteem and expect the worst out of herself Poor girl.

I remember in the beginning they were always saying mallory was so level-headed. i specifically remember an instance where someone said that if a lion was in the basement mal would be very calm. yet we so rarely saw this side of her! usually she was whining about sparkly sweatshirts.

I feel bad for Mal with her low self esteem but I think she'll probably get past it and end up just fine. I really like Mallory and always have.

All of this talk about her being unstable makes me think that she is a more developed character than I thought.

Mallory being mentally unstable would only make me like her more (says the bipolar chick). And now I have to read this bread incident, because I don't remember it at all, but it sounds awesome.

She also has stalker tendencies. In Aloha Baby-sitters, this woman tells her off in the playground for ingoring Jenny P., so Mallory keeps returning to the playground in hopes to find this woman and explain the situation. Mallory writes something like, "I know stalking isn't a normal activity for an eleven year-old..."

I suppose Mallory's stalking is linked quite closely to her spying tendencies. Though to be honest, I don't fault her for that, spying sounds fun to me.

It sounds fun to me, too, but it's still lame how she spends so many Super Specials spying and still never learns anything particularly interesting.

Lol, I'll have to find that Super Special. Mallory didn't seem to have urealistic expectations to me. She was a good student and was truly passionate about writing. Claudia felt the same way about art, but it was worrying how she slacked off at school and fell back on the 'gee whiz, I guess I'll just become a famous artist' card. I think the involvement in the BSC redeemed them both in some way.
Having said that, Mal did seem to have a lot of self-esteem issues. (Remember 'Starring the BSC'?) Maybe cleaning up after seven brats for most of her life drove her around the bend. I could see her becoming depressed or bipolar when she was older.

^I def take Mallory's aspirations to be a writer a LOT more seriously than Claudia's aspirations to be an "artist"

I dunno. She's 11, immature and a little snoopy but not sure bout crazy. She reminds me a bit of an older version of Karen Brewer. Maybe if she was still acting this way at 21 then I might think mentally unstable.

Mallory I don't think has unrealistic expectations for her age. She is 11 years old after all. When I was 11 I actually dreamed of being a writer and had unrealistic beauty expectations as well. As she gets older she will probably outgrow a lot of those expectations and hopefully like herself for who she is. Plus she could figure out a career in writing somehow, their are options out there.

^ Totally agree about Mal not having unrealistic expectations. I think they're actually more realistic than Claudia's "I'm going to be an artist someday" assumption. I think Mal is just more practical than some of the other girls in many ways and this creates stress for her. I don't think, though, it will cause mental instability. I don't even see that it might cause problems. Glad you agree, msstock, with my more positive view of Mal. ;D

Yeah when I was 11ish I definitely was certain I'd be the first female president. I think being a writer is alot more likely for Mal than being president for me
