I don't think Mallory is that weird! I think she's just really insecure. She could grow out of her insecurity, but she'll probably always be a little sensitive/emotional and wishy-washy. I felt bad for her when the kids in her riding class didn't want to be friends with her -- it was sweet how earnest & eager she was to make new friends.

I don't think that Mallory is mentally unstable at all. Awkward, yes, but I always felt that she was developed the way she was as a character to relate more to the readers. If I were to compare to to Jessi, let's say, I sort of like the development and depth that her character was given more. After all, we can't all be sophisticated Stacey types

If any of the girls are (slightly) unstable it would have to be Mary Anne not Mal. Mal just thanks to Ann and Co gets all the bad luck. Yes she can be whiny but overall she is a do-er and typical 11 year old. MA, on the other hand, literally can go from happy to "get out of my life forever," in less than 60 seconds.
Mallory is just like I was, back in the day. Insecure, poor self-esteem and body image, high strung and possibly anxious-- all normal, especially for an 11-year-old. I'm rereading Mallory Hates Boys (and Gym) right now and it's like it's my autobiography from middle school. Huge glasses, frizzy hair, dorky wardrobe, horrible at sports and dreads going to PE every day because she's always picked last or made fun of or yelled at by the teacher-- I went through all of that (although I didn't get my braces until high school, but there were years before I got contacts finally when I did have braces and glasses). She's not mentally unstable, she's just a normal 11 year old who is going through a seriously awkward phase... as most people at 11 do.
