I think that Dawn is protective of Jeff and perhaps that is why she treats MA badly? Like, Dawn is feeling insequre about her relationship with Jeff because maybe he would grow to like Mary Anne more or something?
I noticed that in Dawn on the Coast, they were very affectionate and natural, in a way they never were in Conneticut...Sorry, i'm rambling a little

i've noticed that i don't always recognize that MA and jeff are stepsiblings. i think that's because the books tell us "mary anne gained a stepmother and stepsister," never "a stepmother and stepsiblings." it's always dawn in the middle -- MA is dawn's stepsister, and jeff is dawn's brother. but i'm trying to rework my thinking in order to encompass that aspect.
anyway, that's why it bothers me when dawn sides with jeff. when jeff is in town, they all share a home with the same parents. i wanted to see more brother/sister closeness between MA and jeff. but dawn (as usual) can't stand for things to be peaceful and has to stand in the way of that. she likes to say she's bicoastal and has two families, but it's painfully clear that she has no idea how to balance both families.

It always seemed like they didn't know how to have an easy relationship without Dawn there. I think they awkwardly hug in Great Romance or Wicked Stepsister, and that pretty much sums it up for me. I really dislike Jeff in BSC in the USA because he makes fun of her not once, but twice...I just went and found them: So unnecessarily rude, and both times under his breath. It reminds me why I usually can't stand little kids. Jeff is old enough to behave better than that -- Mary Anne is nothing but polite to him. And of course, there's the Jack stuff later. Those Schafer men need to learn some manners...from Richard, perhaps?

^ Definitely, since he's not learning any from Jack.
