^ Like you, nothingtolose, I didn't like the idea of getting holes pocked in me, either. ;D I didn't get my ears pierced until I was fifteen, when I finally started being interested in clothes/accessories, etc. I have a tattoo, no problem, and I still can't get past the idea of someone poking holes in my ears. v v

I'm the opposite. I have no problem with piercings, but the idea of tattoos skeezes me out.

I'm with you baseballchica. I have a tattoo but have no desire to ever get my ears or anything else pierced.

I can't imagine being okay with a tattoo and not with pierced ears!

Well, the main reason I don't want to pierce my ears is because I've always suffered from chronic ear infections and don't want to take the risk of them possibly getting infected.

I'd be okay with getting a tattoo. I just haven't. Mostly because I can't afford one. Plus, I could be rash about getting my nose ring, because if I decided a year later I didn't want it, I could just take it out. But a tattoo? Not quite the same thing. But I still love my nose ring. I want to get an actual ring for it, versus the stud I wear. A girl at Hot Topic told me to just get earrings because they don't sell proper nose rings since the fashion is for studs.

I hope you don't decide to get a tattoo lionessblack. I got mine during a rebellious period shortly after I turned 18 and wish now that I'd never gotten it. I'd like to get it removed but don't have the money to pay for that right now.

I could never get a tattoo. For one, I'm not a fan of needles. I also can't think of anything that would be meaningful enough for me personally to have it on my body forever. My niece is 12 now and both her mother (my sister) and myself have been trying to talk her into getting her ears pierced. She doesn't want to - she's still in this sort of "Peter Pan" phase where she doesn't want to grow up and still wants to act like a kid. Very different from Mallory, for sure.

I don't think not having your ears pierced makes you immature. I never wear earrings any more for various reasons -- I don't like how they look, they itchy, they are way more trouble then they are worth. Plus for a long time, not wearing earrings set me apart.

I wasn't saying I think my niece is immature because she doesn't want to get her ears pierced... whenever we talk or spend time together I don't really see her as a little kid. She's one smart kid and we have good conversations. It's just in some ways she is resisting anything that as seen as growing up - makeup, jewelry, bras, puberty, etc. She's probably more typical of real kids her age than anything we read about in BSC books, Judy Blume, the Alice books by Phyllis Naylor, where all the girls are dying to get their period, wear a bra, and kiss boys. She's been going through this "I don't want to grow up" phase for over a year now. Maybe she'll never get her ears pierced, but she'll probably be a brilliant veterinarian or an author someday and holes in her ears won't matter. When I was her age I wanted to do everything my sister did because she was so much older than me and I thought everything she did was incredibly cool. Kind of like how Claire and Margo looked up to Mallory and wanted to go around the mall with her because they thought Mal did all the fun stuff.

I did the EXACT same thing. I couldn't understand the Judy Blume books with the girls dying to get their periods. The whole idea freaked me out (obviously, ten years later, I'm okay with it, lol). But I still played with my toys on a regular basis until I was 13 or so. The growing up thing terrified me. (still does sometimes!) I was definitely more of a Kristy or Mary Anne.

Oh, same here! I did not want my period, I can tell you that! (In fact, I cried when I got it lol) and I just wanted to stay a little kid forever. Ya know, playing with barbies and other toys, all this stuff. I've always hated change and I didn't want to grow up (and can't say I do, yet, in one way! I'm 19 so still a teenager but next year ... lol)
